Yes. If it is in critical front line services vital to business continuity.
If people voted with their feet and left Royal Mail, meaning a labour shortage that would concentrate the mind. But RM doesn't seem to have staff leaving en masse so perhaps they seem unhappy enough to be coaxed into populist strike action but not unhappy enough to leave. Cake and eat it springs to mind.

We were happy and still are happy to go on strike. Sorry if it inconveniences you but we would like a decent pay rise and more importantly our working conditions not to be changed. Do you think that these high prices are forwarded onto the posties etc? No. We work for £11ish per hour. As for wagering that some would think nothing about stealing maybe you are right but as proven with all walks of working life rich and well educated people are thieves and criminals too. Maybe you should speak to your postman about it and get the facts . Let us know how it goes on the Strike thread in the BP when you’ve told him how you feel about the strikes or you could simply bitch about it and hide behind you keyboard.

What do you mean legally there isn’t a claim? There very much is. The buyer contracted with the seller to buy a bag, he paid for it and got what, nothing? That’s a claim for breach of contract and not especially complicated! It’s entirely irrelevant that it was lost in transit by PF, unless the buyer specifically agreed with the seller to take all risk once collected by the courier, which I doubt he did.
Obviously I’m not saying anyone is going to claim against anyone, but you’re wrong when you say there isn’t a claim between them legally.
Sure. And if you don't get what you want plenty of other employers willing to pay much more than RM for your skills. Amazon for one. So genuine question why don't you leave? That would really put Royal Mail in the crapper of they lost a bunch of skilled staff to the competition.
I'm a strong believer in not putting up with a situation I'm not happy with and instead focusing on finding a better situation. If that is being 'simple' then so be it, but I'll never settle for 2nd best and I never expect anybody else in society to give a monkeys about my problems either (bar the usual platitudes) so I sort my problems by myself and try not to bring others down to the same level particularly if they have nothing to do with my problems in the first place. Why should it be acceptable that I inconvenience anyone else as a result of something I'm not happy about?
In answer to your question. I don’t want to. I enjoy the job, I enjoy the exercise and being outside. We have had three strike days in the past two months which is hardly an inconvenience to the public to be honest especially since RM aren’t even covering all postage rounds everyday now. So you may have noticed that you don’t get post everyday even though according to the governing body you are supposed too. They don’t have enough staff and like you suggested many are now leaving to greener pastures. All offices are now running understaffed to the point that many are %20 down from what they should be. The only people benefiting from this are RM as they have less pensions , NI, etc to pay out and to make matters worse they are not filling the vacancies.
The media unfortunately paint a picture of the RM staff being greedy and wanting inflationary pay rises but that simply isn’t the case. RM are trying to implement lots of changes to existing staff contracts that affect sickpay, working hours that run into the evenings, and flexible working hours that would mean working less hours when it’s quiet and longer hours when it’s busy - ie Christmas time for no more money. They also want to withdraw the financial supplement that posties get for delivering all the door to door rubbish that you get and put in bin as it’s considered junk mail by many but to RM it’s a great source of revenue. The changes that I’ve listed are just the tip of the iceberg so we aren’t talking minor contractual changes. I used to agree with you on inconveniencing people being a selffish CUN# thing to do as I also once lived in London and worked in TV and hated Bob Crow and the RMT as the tubes were crap already without strike action . I also hated the Teaching Unions as they knackered many kids (me being one of them) education back in the 80s during the transition to GCSE from O level exams. I’m semi retired these days and out of London and now the boot is on the other foot. I now see why unions exist as otherwise companies would treat staff like rubbish and push them about for peanuts.

My late uncle, as well as a couple of cousins, were “hard working Brits. They were postmen. ” they weren’t thieves. I think I probably know maybe half a dozen posties, all decent folk.
Acid test- if you went on strike, would anyone notice? That’s how we ought to rate the importance of a job and scale its rewards.

Thank you for the insight. I still don't agree with strike action but am grateful for you taking the time to explain the situation. I think where there are changes to existing contractual situations and they aren't accompanied by changes to remuneration then that does for sure justify action of some sort - I'd have thought legal recourse on the part of the Union on behalf of affected employees would be a route?

I guess it's because unfortunately in the real world most people don't have that luxury for a variety of reasons and anyone thinking that employers are right to disproportionately increase profits to shareholders and wages/bonuses to senior execs whilst giving lower rewards to employees and diminishing their terms/conditions is part of the problem. And it's a big problem right now that needs addressing.

From my brief time as a manager at the Post Office, similar to the RM but not exactly the same, the staff would drive me crazy. The unions had such a strong hold on everything, and man did the staff have it easy, years of constant treats of strikes and wage demands meant that most PO branches had a target to lose money! which is just stupid.
The staff simply got paid too much, had too many holidays, full sick pay, full maternity pay, hell one of the counter girls that worked for me had 2 kids in the space of 3 years, due to the large amount of (full paid) maternity time off she had, she then accrued so much holiday entitlement that even when she was came be back to work she had months of holidays to take, she supplemented this with some (full paid) sick pay - which the counter staff would joke and call extra holiday pay. The result was in those 3 years she hardly worked and was paid her full salary the entire time.
And if the managers tried to clamp down on this kind of thing, the union rep would be in and have a stern word followed by your regional manager calling asking you what you are playing at upsetting the unions, it was one of the main reasons why I left, trying to improve performance with both hands tied behind your back.
Staff would always take their full allocation of sick pay, and most spent their time waiting for the branches to be closed down (which was a given as my target was to lose money) to then get a huge pay-out.
The whole thing was just crazy and eye opening, and would never happen in a private company.
I stopped reading after ‘brief time’. More balony.
But this is the company that had honest managers jailed and die with their reputations in tatters rather than admit to a mistake in their multi million pound computer system. That’s just what we saw, after a long campaign to get at the truth. Goodness knows what else has gone on over the years. They did all that to non unionised managers who individually couldn’t fight the Post Office. In every business there’ll be piss takers, but honestly would you blame anyone who worked for a corrupt employer like the Post Office for taking what they could get? As for Maternity pay, people have children, that’s why we’re here!

I clearly stated it was a minority. And in any case it appears a RM employee did in fact steal this bag. So I guess I was right?
Appreciate that isn't ideal for the echo chamber some are trying to create in here (which isn't related to RM at all but is an opportunity to vent against 'the man'). Worth noting I've had several PMs to share agreement with what I've said and all from very well regarded and respected members here. Naturally they won't comment on the thread as they'd get drowned out by the 'shouters-at-clouds' as usual. The thing about clouds is they are formed of water vapour (hot air basically). And they are flimsy and soon pass or dissipate. Think there may be a message in all that

I know it doesn’t really help, and might be stating the obvious, but this is why I absolutely wait for the buyer to confirm receipt and are completely happy before spending the money.
