Is that the queen standing on her coffin?

    Some kind of monarchical resurrection?

    Bit weird.

Yes, he was based in Anglesey, and then flew for the East Anglican Air Ambulance.

He flew me, and a bunch of other air cadets who had won blues, in a VC10 (XV106 from Brize if I recall correctly) in the late seventies/early eighties. He was in RAF uniform then, I'm pretty sure he flew a Hercules at around the same time and he famously crashed an HS146 some time later, so I'd assume he was doing something in Transport Command.

Thanks for confirming my hazy memories, gents. I did a quick search myself and the hairy conditions I mentioned seems to be a figment of my imagination. Nevertheless hats off to Prince William as well as his brother.

Interesting to hear about the King’s military history as well. As famous as his crash may be, this was the first time I heard about it. I was born in the late 70’s, so before my time I suppose.

Some appointments carry the privilege of wearing a miniature Sovereign's Cypher on the points of the aiguillettes. These aiguillettes are also worn by commissioned officers of the Household Cavalry (in full dress only).'

I've no idea what uniform Aitch is wearing & why he is wearing said aiguillettes.

Edit: he's wearing them because he was an officer in the Household Calvary (Blues & Royals).
At the time he was a Personal aide-de-camp to the Queen. He lost that privilege when he stopped being a working Royal. Confusion followed for the vigil...see https://archive.ph/NkNyw.

Edit: While, according to that story, Prince Harry was not allowed to wear the I signia of a Personal aide-de-camp, looking at some photos, it appears that Prince Andrew was allowed that privilege. Maybe that might go some way to explaining the rancour that seemingly developed?

Supposedly Andrew was still AdC to the Queen so he could retain the cipher.

Someone had better edit some WIki pages:

    • see Prince Andrew for Appointments 1 February 1984 – 13 January 2022: Personal aide-de-camp to the Queen

    • see Personal aide-de-camp - Former ADCs for Appointed by Queen Elizabeth II - Vice Admiral - Duke of York (1 February 1984 – 13 January 2022)

Also...A statement from Buckingham Palace regarding The Duke of York: With The Queen's approval and agreement, The Duke of York’s military affiliations and Royal patronages have been returned to The Queen.

William served as a RAF Helicopter Air Sea Rescue Pilot
Harry saw active serve with the Royal Marines, before becoming being a gunner on Apache Helicopters .
Andrew was a Royal Naval Helicopter pilot and saw active service during the Falklands War.

According to this he was in the Royal Marines. It doesn’t say if he saw action as a Royal Marine or some other company though

In the photo he's wearing a green beret as Captain General Royal Marines, an honorary military appointment, but he (to the best of my knowledge) had not completed the All Arms Commando Course. I'm not sure that counts as being in the Royal Marines, but others may disagree.

That article says "He served in the Army for 10 years, undertaking two tours of Afghanistan and rising to the rank of captain". No other military service is referred to.

I thought all his honorary titles were rescinded but the ones he earned were kept.

I'm pretty sure that is correct and I don't think that a retired Captain has an automatic right to wear uniform.

However, we were prattling on about this assertion (see bold):
