I have a 6.5" wrist and I think it looks fine although I have always preferred bigger watches and it is probably the largest sized watch my wrist could cope with. I've also had every Apple Watch Series 1 - 7 except the 8 as it wasn't worth the upgrade from the 7 but the Ultra is. Each series where the watch face became bigger, i.e. Series 4 to 44mm and Series 7 to 45mm, have been the best upgrades as it makes the watch slightly easier to use and usually accompanied by a brighter screen too.Originally Posted by Topcat30093
I bought the Ultra direct from Apple as it's easier to return within 14 days as I was unsure as to the size but after wearing it for a couple days the 45mm Series felt small by comparison and I couldn't go back. My only gripe with the Ultra is the straps. I originally purchased mine with the medium green Alpine loop and I found it really fiddly to take on and off. When you pull the strap through the loop to slacken it you have to pull quite hard to overcome ridges where hook goes and then you pull too hard and it comes through quickly and the hook strikes the bezel edge which looks like it could damage quite easily. Also with the hook attached at the top of the watch when worn on the left wrist it hooks to the strap from the wrong side when your wrist is inverted so it feels cack handed to me. I like my straps snug to my wrist which means that the hook has to wiggled about to get it come out again adding to whole fiddly nature getting it on and off. The Alpine loop also comes with titanium attaching parts which doesn't feel good when you slide them into place against the titanium case as it's metal rubbing against metal.
Needless to say I returned the Ultra and exchanged it for one with the Trail loop although I only use the original Sport bands and loops. It is really good that they made the previous larger case sized straps still fit the Ultra as Apple will make you buy a new iPhone case with every generation. The Fluoroelastomer bands in particular also don't have the loops for the strap to be pulled through so they connect directly to the watch head and make it sit flatter on your wrist giving it a slightly smaller appearance which is good for wrists like mine. Also no metal against metal when attaching them.
The Ultra is a good upgrade over a Series 7/8 but the straps are very expensive, at just under £100, but you can pick up some really nice older brand new and genuine Apple 42/44/45mm straps for much less than their original RRP so that's a big plus. I would also recommend only using genuine Apple straps as I do have a cheap copy, which I previously used for the gym, and it didn't like attaching to the Ultra whereas it was fine with previous series.
There are no less than 3 sizes of Alpine loop, 2 sizes of Trail Loop and 1 size of Ocean Band and, as I know I will inevitably upgrade to Ultra Series 2 next year, selling the Ultra with the "wrong" sized strap for the buyer will no doubt potentially depress resale value not that Apple watches have been anywhere near as good as an iPhone in that department. Therefore I would suggest that the one sized Ocean band is probably the one to get and also has the added bonus of not having metal attaching points to grate nor the strap loops which make the watch look bigger. What would be nice is if Apple offered the Ultra as a head only option for £100 less but they make an awful lot of profit on that extra £100 so it's wishful thinking!

Try moving the ends round so the hook end when the strap loose is at 12 O'clock rather than 6 O'clock, make is easier putting the watch on.I have just got one.
Initial impressions are pretty good - as Martyn said it's not a watch (it's much more).
Mine is on a medium alpine strap, I have a 7.5" wrist - photo below shows the position of the clip.
I did the same when I first put the strap on mine.

I have a slightly bigger wrist but wear mine on my right wrist and find it more comfortable then my series 7.
I have the alpine strap and trail. Funnily enough prefer the alpine strap. It’s a big game changer for me for battery life alone.

Here's a couple of pictures of mine on an Abyss Blue Sport Band and I don't think they quite do it justice in that it does look quite big on my wrist but, as I mentioned previously, I do prefer larger wearing watches. If you're new an Apple Store I would definelty go in a try a few on with try different straps.
I think the ultra looks like the Apple Watch always should have somehow. Sadly I really want to like the Apple Watch - I had a series 4 and thought it was great for about a month - but something about being constantly alerted and monitored irritates me to the core! Whilst I use my iPhone throughout the day there are large chunks of my evening where I retire it to a cupboard which I think is better for my mental health tbh. I just don’t want or enjoy constant availability and attention!
These are starting to look a lot more like a mini iPhone on your wrist - maybe that’s the point - and I never liked the exposed crystal on the older designs. Be interesting to see how they evolve. I have to admit they look a bit big but my wrists are over 9 inches so I might try one on to see how they fit on my stupid gorilla arms! Biggest upgrade seems to be the battery which can only be a good thing I guess

Good battery life this weekend. 49 hrs on the wrist and still 19% to go. The battery life on this def makes it less hassle - especially buggering off for the weekend.
I guess give it 5 years and they might last a week lol

Just got mine today, and already I can see I'll struggle to take it off. It's made me think about consolidating my collection: one dress watch, one very nice watch (weekends), and this for the rest of the time. I also like the idea of not worrying about being mugged with this one, regardless of whether that's a risk just in my head or not...

I noticed earlier these are £820 at Costco.
Not much of a discount, but I think some of you may be members.
I am very tempted to upgrade my series 5 to one, however they look huge. Even the photos on this thread make them look like the watch is wearing the arm and not the other way around.

They don’t have stock, I ordered one.
I was advised the stores do not have stock and I should use store pickup. I went online and no stores are offering pickup options so had to order for home delivery. Expected in two weeks.
I’m also advised it’s easy to move my mobile number from existing Apple Watch to new one via the app. So all good.
Might have to go an try one. Good to see a photo when yours lands.
Trouble is - you buy one of these (or any Apple Watch) and to make all the date gathering and functionality worthwhile you never wear anything else. Which makes your watch collection redundant (unless you want to be one of those people wearing 2 watches, and who wants to do that?) - please hand your TZ-UK membership in at the door on your way out!!

I’ve stopped wearing my usual automatics , it makes my watches pretty much redundant for day to day use and they’re more used for special occasions.
I found with my series 7 I would only wear it for exercise. The Ultra seems to have more appeal for some reason and changed that, I think its the flat screen which makes it feel huge and the fact I can forget about recharging it every night which drove me around the bend.
I guess you could just wear it for exercise and diving, but there are better options for both.
We have a woman in our dive club who works for Apple, so I'm looking forward to seeing this in action, but I won't be buying one.

Yeah, this is my fear. In my spare time, I rely on the apple watch...I use it for tennis, running, cycling and would like to start using some of the more general health stuff like sleep tracking.
The only time I wear my mechanicals is to the office, when a plastic strapped apple watch would not be a good look.
Tried one on and can definitely see the appeal! I want one but it is just a tad too large I think.

For the last 35 yrs or so, all I have worn is mechanical watches.
Shunning away from everything that was battery powered.
But in recent months, with all the negative publicity on the availability of some brands. As well as the huge prices that they now fetch. It has killed the enjoyment that I had.
Back in July I started exercising as my fitness was terrible.
This led me to research the many different brands.
I liked my Garmin, but was struck by the Ultra.
So having tried one and liked the many functions decided to get one.
I still wear my mechanical watches on a regular basis and believe that they can both share equal wrist time.

I can (kind of) see the appeal, but I know there'll be an Ultra Mk2 in six months time and in 3 years Apple will stop all support for this, so that will always mean I'm going to pass on an Apple 'Watch'.
I also don't really think it's a watch. Sure you wear it on your wrist and it tells the time, but that's not its primary purpose (any more than the simple fitness band I wear on my right wrist is a watch).
I'm sure some will assume I'm just a Luddite and would have cried foul of Quartz watches (actually I hated the earliest LED ones, I couldn't see the point of pressing a button to tell the time instead of just looking at the dial), but no, because they still had the primary purpose of telling the time.
Obviously, Apple disagree and there are plenty of people happy to endlessly shovel money Apple's way to have the latest i-whatever, I'm just not one of them (I do have an iPad Air, but its getting on now and I refuse to buy another JUST so I can upgrade to the latest apps).

I don’t have a current Apple Watch (I like to purposefully disconnect from these types of gadgets for my mental health tbh) but I had one a few years ago - a series 4 I think - and even then I was astonished by the technology. I bit like getting my first smartphone (an iPhone 4) it just blew my mind that technology had advanced to this point. Those people that say they look awful etc - if you haven’t actually owned one for a few days imho you have no idea how clever an Apple Watch is or what it’s capable of. Leagues ahead of a ‘simple fitness band’. Star Trek level stuff! And let’s face it, with the cost of mechanical watches going stratospheric - and servicing costs doing the same - replacing an Apple Watch every 2 or 3 years really isn’t expensive within the financial realms of this hobby. That’s just an excuse. And if you like your Apple Watch you will want the upgrades - some do it every year, some do it every few years, but they are a very clever bit of kit. You can’t just dismiss them as ‘ugly’. That’s missing the point.

Well, maybe I'm wrong on the period, but they certainly withdraw software support after a time, something that isn't a problem with a traditional watch or a dive computer that doesn't have a controlled app to work.

You are wrong indeed: the series 3 was released in Sep 2017 and they stopped selling it last month. Needless to say that all the apps that were there still work. The same is true for the earlier generations.
Apps developers may decide to stop development for older watches when the shift in a new watch technology means they need a major change; this doesn’t mean the watch you purchased stops working, just that you can’t download the latest version of the app.
Computer technology does become obsolete over time because new developments allow for new features that are seen as desirable. It doesn’t mean it stops working and doing what you bought it for.

This is why I sold my Apple Watch. I wasn’t wearing any proper watches as I wanted my data. I still miss the lack of notifications my oura cannot provide & keep getting drawn back to one again.

It was annoyingly nice on the wrist. The size was no issue.
Luckily they didn’t have any in stock so I didn’t make an impulse purchase
