I didn't know you cared - Uncle Mort question.

I'm watching the whole series through again as I introduced it to the wife and to my great surprise she's enjoying it.

Anyway my question is; what is the badge that uncle Mort wears on his lapel?

    I've had a google - and nothing.

    Anyone know?
    Cheers,
    Neil.

Always find it hard to resist doing a bit of Internet searching.

Anything to distract me from work =)

I had a quick 15-minute scoot around the WWW and have drawn a blank.

Either my Google-Fu is weak, or it's one of those rare questions that Google (other search engines are available) can't answer.

The only thing I found that came close was a comment on a blogpost that went like this:

Quite a typecast North country gentleman in fact. He's got to a T, complete with pint of mild, flat cap, collarless shirt, fingerless woolly gloves and regimental lapel badge.
    So...

...I'm guessing it's some kind of regimental badge.

But I couldn't find a YouTube video or Google image large enough or high enough quality to get a decent look.

Has anyone else got the answer?

I think it's something to do with the Green Howards (possibly a 'remembrance' badge in memory of the fallen). The white cross (I think!) is the giveaway.

    Here's a clue:

About half a minute in, Mort makes a show of his badge when he remembers a game in the FA Cup against Sheffield Wednesday.

I always thought it was a Sheffield Utd badge, but I can’t see any Blades fan describing their bitter rivals as plain “Sheffield Wednesday“. Maybe it’s Barnsley?

Can't help thinking a few beers with Geoffrey Boycott would be quite a similar experience.

Thanks, off to search for the series.

6th round of the FA cup vs Sheffield Wednesday would be Blackburn Rovers in 1966. I don't think he'd support a Lancs team though?

It doesn't look like a Sheffield Utd. badge, though it's hard to make much out at all. The closest I could find is a Boys Brigade badge.

    Maybe a trade union badge?

At first I thought Sheffield united but that's not right. The Green Howards is a good shout, a Yorkshire regiment.

Mort often shoved his badge forward when referring to either, the first world war, football or trade unionism so hard to get a handle on it.

    I'd love to know.
    Cheers,
    Neil.

Not entirely sure this is right, but I think he might wear different badges, and I suspect it is a little joke at the expense of Mort's war record.

    From your photo:

(there are a number of similar metal badges for this Service)

And also, this badge (again there are variants):

    Ooh controversial!

I don't think it is a QARNC badge though TBH.

White cross, red background with symbols in the four quadrants?
    Cheers,
    Neil.

Well, the whole thing apparently passed me by - I was probably a bit young at the time and obsessed with Thunderbirds etc!

My wife was watching the later series today (I won't watch it with the replacement actors) and Uncle Mort held forward his badge and claimed it as St John's ambulance splint division.

It does look very similar to some older SJA badges but not the same at all.

Mort does proffer the badge for all sorts of events and for comic effect so it is still up in the air!
    Cheers,
    Neil.

    That's when it was good.

The later series when they replaced Carter and Pat are awful IMO.

    I eard that, pardon.

Any of the books you would particularly recommend, I’d like to give one a go?

I found two hardback editions on Amazon and sent to my mum, I Didn’t Know You Cared and Uncle Mort’s North County but you’ll have to hunt them down as I’m sure they’re long since out of print.

    In the Sotadic Zone, apparently.

Anyone who likes this will probably enjoy another of Peter Tinniswood's adaptations, this time for radio and based on his novel "Winston". It often pops up on R4 Extra, but you should be able to listen here . The cast are all excellent, but Maurice Denham really excels as the father.

The three Peter Tinniswood books the telly series was based on are:

    A Touch of Daniel 1969
    I didn't Know You Cared 1973
    Except You're a Bird 1974

And probably best read in this order

Thanks for that Bob. I'll look into it. I do like a radio play in t'afternoon (channelling uncle Mort )

Being a southern softie, the North holds a sort of mystique to me.

Uncle Staveley's catchphrase. Carter was played by Stephen Rea.

BigVic & Dapper - I also checked out Ebay and ABE Books and have ordered A Touch of Daniel. Thanks both for the tips. To be added to my big pile of books pending reading.
