    Advice re watch postage

    Hi All,

Have a new incoming so needing to thin out the collection and raise funds. Problem is, I have only previously sold watches under the 1k and have always used Royal Mail.

So looking for some advice, this time its two Omegas, a Rio Speedmaster MK2 and a white face Globemaster constellation.

Clearly worried about them going missing etc.. so if anyone has good advice on picking a courier (or is Royal Mail good enough ?) it would be gratefully received.

If you’re selling in the UK only and value is less than £2500 RMSD is probably the best and most economic way of sending.

Over £2500 then you can use Secursus to insure it. You can send it tracked 24 or 48 declaring the value to RM at £100. Item description as stainless steel timing device or stainless steel measurement tool. Securus insure the full value for a % based fee. You’ll need to photograph a lot of the evidence. Eg: the watch being packed in its box, that box being packed in the shipping box, the labelling and description of contents etc.

It sounds a load of hassle but it’s actually quite straight forward.

I’ve used them three or four times with no hassle. I haven’t had any issues with packages not arriving though. So cannot comment on what they are like in the event of you needing to claim.

Anything upto 2.5k and Royal Mail have been my preferred option.
Never had any issues and always arrived safely and intact.Like any insurance, its only fully tested in that unlikely event of it going missing.
Anything above there 2.5k limit id always go for a f2f,I know of other insurance to increase the cover for anything above that 2.5k.

Are you talking about Consequential Loss Cover (and not the actual value of the item which I'm sure is still limited to £2,500)?

Thanks for the replies. Both the watches are over 3k so may have to consider a f2f.

“Consequential loss cover up to a maximum of £10,000”

So what’s the small print of that ?

It would seem that the value is still a maximum of £2500

Ah whoops I've been using that for quite some time when posting watches! Lucky nothing has happened to them! I do still have a parcelpro account so I'll revert back to that

I've sold F2F on Rolex, due in part to the value and also to ensure that there are no issues and the buyer is entirely happy with the watch.

Apart from the packaging, you are looking at the basic RMSD + Secursus premium, which I feel is better spent on car/motorcycle travel to meet the prospective purchaser.

Alternatively - since I see you are in Selkirk, see what Jamie (Harry's) in Gala might offer?

Yeah know Jamie but sadly he has an abundance of stock, so that’s a no go at present.

Just a point worth being aware of - RMSD insurance is £0 if you post an item over the value of £2,500.

For example, if you post an item worth £3,000 and pay for the maximum insurance of £2,500, you're not taking a risk on the £500 difference, you're taking a risk on the full £3k value of the parcel.

Just to reiterate. Two companies I know of can insure parcels containin watches/high value goods above RMSD limit:

Secursus - who charge 1% of the insured value
IFS Inforsure (https://shipinforsure.com/) - who are a great deal cheaper, but you need to apply for an account.

To my knowledge, nobody has tried to claim off either, so... caveat emptor.

I posted this in another thread but it’s worth reposting:

“I was just reading this thread on Pistonheads which implies that Secursus don’t cover private individuals and additionally items sent to eBay’s authentication department are not covered because they are being sent to a third party.

It does mention online marketplaces so would that include forums? I suppose it would. Also watches being sent for repairs are only covered if sent by a company. Has anyone had the same information from Secursus?”

    ^ Why not ask Secursus?

It would be interesting to get clarification from them as I wasn't able to do a deal this week due to uncertainties over insurance in transit.

Mail Boxes Etc provide a suitable shipping + insurance service (they're on a lot of high streets) but at a slightly higher cost.

    Thank you, Tony.

I just called them and it works out at roughly 2.5% of the value covered. If you sold a Submariner at say £14,000 that would be roughly £350 for the additional cover required on top of their shipping fees.

Perhaps worth building a network of TZers, retired/salesmen etc willing to deliver across the country for costs ?

^ A few on here alone would keep them in full-time employment.

Ouch. That's exactly 10 times the cost of using Parcel Pro!

At that price I would be inclined to book a train a few days in advance and deliver the watch plus it would possibly be cheaper.
