Thread: CWC Special Projects diver?

    CWC Special Projects diver?

Browsing ebay and came across this listing for a CWC SP diver.

It's a steel cased day date with SP stamped on the caseback below the NSN. The seller states it's a 90s watch and it has a T dial. If that's correct then it can't be a civvy version (they did an RN300 day date for a while I think?).

I've read lots about CWC all over the Internet but don't remember reading anything about this.

Anyone got any thoughts or know anything about them?

There is still a bit or research being done on these, special procurement / project is thought to be the meaning of the SP.
Are they an additional contract? Unlikely as they have not marked others in the same way, are they a contract outside the MOD for another customer? (My hunch), or are they a testing / prototype batch. The jury is still out.
They do tend differ from the typical format, this watch has nice patina, an SBS dial in stainless case.

Someone over on MWR was pretty sure these were a procurement by the MOD Nuclear facilities police.

I’ve asked MOD police at our place but they couldn’t shed any light.
    I’ve got one.
I tell people it stands for Steak Pie🙂

My hunch is ‘Sales Purpose’ like ‘Drill Purpose’ - but the chaps running the Walt social media narrative on these watches want to believe everything was worn on the balcony.

I can think of zero reasons why watches destined for issue would be de-serialised. None. It defies common sense.

And, as the balcony types wish people to believe, if it’s because they were ‘Special’ (nice SF ring to it ) I’d say the one thing a ‘special purpose’ wouldn’t do is write ‘special purpose’ on the watch .
That’s the ‘don’t tell them your name, Pike’ school of reasoning
