The most versatile watch I own.... the 16710 GMT Master II

As many of us do, collections grow and shrink, pieces become an infatuation, you buy it you like it then you sell it in the quest for the next 'grail' and the cycle continues. In 2004 the first Rolex I bought was a 16710LN, at the time I struggled deciding between the Submariner date and the GMT. Eventually I bought the GMT with black insert for £2300 from John Dyson in Leeds. Loved it wore it now and then and some years later traded it for a Sea-Dweller. In the last 18 years I have owned 6 GMT Masters mostly 16710's but there was a 1675 and a 16750 amongst them. It has now become my decision that for modernity and function that the 16710 is my favourite version and possibly my favourite Rolex!

A couple of weeks ago I picked this 2005 16710 up from a forum member. It a cracker, full set, was originally a 16710LN but was fitted with a nice Pepsi. Since. getting the watch I have added an all black bezel insert, and red & black insert and a brand new old stock jubilee 62510H with the GMT correct 502T end links. Along with an Oysterflex and a hand made leather strap and a couple of NATO's this must now be the most versatile watch ever. So many variations and combinations for any occasion. I really am struggling to justify having any other watch. I'll leave you with some photos.

Such great watches. I have a 2004 16710 pepsi and it would be a a great one and only.

The black insert really changed the whole look of the watch
I have a GMT Master and would never have thought of changing the bezel for a black one
    Great post
    Thanks for the inspiration

Given the choice it would be Pepsi with Jubilee for me, but as you have alluded to it suits a myriad of different combos very well.
    Cheers,

I have been lucky enough to own several examples over the years, all now long gone. I found it to be a fairly dull and uninspiring watch on the wrist and reluctantly came to the conclusion that they look better on other people!! I hope you continue to enjoy your latest example.

I'm usually an oyster wearer but the oyster flex had never occurred to me. Do you have a pic on it?

Your watch looks amazing. I think I remember when it was on a sales post no so long ago. Ive never had a Rolex GMT though have tried most other references. This really has shown me the range and variety of looks you can get, so more smiles. I see what you mean by a one watch collection. Thanks for sharing the pics.

Couldn’t agree more, my Pepsi 16710 could undoubtedly be my only watch, I certainly plan to never sell it unless things go seriously bewbs up.

Heartily agree: my 16710 (with the burgundy/black bezel) was my daily for 15 years. It only started to get pushed out after a) I realised just how much it was going to cost to keep it in good condition after it had a few bashes against walls and rocks when I was climbing with it on b) how much unwelcome attention brands like Rolex get and c) many more watches appeared thanks to this place!

The first two points rather take the shine off what is - at least from a mechanical/utilitarian standpoint - the perfect watch for me. These days my daily is a Sinn 857 UTC, which cost only slightly less than the GMT-II did when I bought it and can take more of a bash without me worrying about it.

I've only ever worn my GMT on its original Oyster bracelet. The clasp is a bit janky on that vintage, but the SELs make the bracelet feel good.

    I concur.
    I’ve got a 1675 I could try that with.
I’ve read many posts about how easy it is to change the inserts…

    …is it really?

With a plastic guitar pic or two the bezels pop off easily enough and pushing the aluminium ring out of the steel outer is simple. Its then a case of re assembling the outer ring, click spring and friction washer and clicking it back onto the watch, then the most important part lining up the insert so the triangle is perfectly at 12!

Here are a few pics of it on the Oysterflex.

Super easy, until you lose the little spring and spend a whole evening with your nose in the carpet pile looking for it.

Less of a problem with the 1675 as no click-spring to worry about

I like this but I feel it needs the end pieces, as I’m not forms of the gap

Tried out another look today with a beat up old Black bezel insert and a grey NATO.

Totally unexpectedly one of the best combo I’ve seen in ages!

    1) that needs to be posted in the perfect strap combo thread
    2) can you please tell me where did you get the nato from?

I've not had an opportunity to try the Oysterflex bracelet - is it really as good as it should be?

Thanks for the comments. I will indeed post this pic in perfect strap combo.
The NATO is one of Eddie’s Time Factors ones with blasted hardware.

Fabulous watch. My brother bought one in 2003 and it remains his favourite and most worn watch.

That black bezel insert looks sublime, completely changes the watch. Impressive.

I had the same model, bought around the same time (2004), sold in 2020. Sometimes I miss it, mostly over Rolex though.

Lovely write up though. Thank you.

I bought mine from a TZ.com forum member back in 2008 or 2009... and another TZ.com member helped me to write an article of this watch almost 9 years later.

    https://luxurywatches635.wordpress.c...ster-ii-16710/

I love the 16710 but I wish I'd bought a 1675/16750 instead.... for less money. For some reason I find that model more attractive. Now they're crazy expensive.

I have my 16710 and will never part with it... but personally I tend to wear my 16610 much more. GMT is a watch that photographs so well though... but the black steel Sub has always been my favorite.

Still a great watch. Enjoy yours.
