    Help! I need a 28.5mm dial for ETA 1080

    Hi All,

I've inherited my uncle's watch. It's nothing special, an Ernest Borel Incastar, but it has sentimental value.

As you can see the dial is shot so I need 28.5mm dial for ETA 1080 (FWIW is curved towards the edge - not flat)

Anyone got something that will fit? Or know where I can get one? Doesn't have to be an EB one, anything decent will do.

    Thanks

Is that the result of water ingress and the resulting rust?

Maybe it can be cleaned up using cleaning swabs and distilled water or a mild detergent. Since you are apparently planning to deep six the dial anyway it is certainly worth a shot.

Probably can't be cleaned to a level of perfection but maybe to the point of being presentable is possible.

Look for something like this: https://www.cousinsuk.com/product/co...bs?code=S35526

They also make a cleaning pen: https://www.cousinsuk.com/product/gl...bergeon-swiss#

I’m no expert but if that is just surface rust, or residue - then it could/should be ‘improvable’? Would be nice to keep the original dial on a sentimentally valuable watch, no?

Unlikely that the dial can be cleaned to an acceptable condition. Also possible that the movement is water- damaged.

Having the dial refinished is probably the best option. It’s a few years since I had one done, price is likely to be £100 or more.

Have you had the dial out and measured it exactly or is the dimension an estimate from the crystal. You may have tolerance to go 0.5mm-1mm over or under depending if any of the dial is sitting under the bezel (also the prism effect of the crystal means that a gap is obscured.

Lots of loose 1080 movements on Ebay if you really don't mind what's on the dial. A couple NOS, for example

Annoyingly, while there are quite a few Ernest Borel Incastar dials, most of them are marked automatic - it helps if you widen the location criteria to Worldwide as there appears to be quite a lot Stateside. If it was me, I'd set up a couple of Ebay Saved Searches for Ernest Borel and Incastar and just wait. If you do go down the redial route I would recommend lots of due diligence as the data indicates that lots of people selecting this option have fairly low standards . That little logo between 6 and the centre might be a struggle to reproduce.
    In the Sotadic Zone, apparently.

I that would clean up ok, certainly be improved upon a lot, as said though, the underlying cause is going to be a rusty movement.
    Cheers..

    Thanks all.

    I've bought this:

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/265815145189

At £13 inc. p&p it's not much of a risk!

    We'll see if it fits . . . .

    Fingers crossed.

Not a bad outcome I think?

(The 17mm lugs rather limited my options. Anyway here it is on a vintage J B Champion with spring-loaded end pieces. Not ideal but it will do.)

Possible new career on the face of it. Good job.
