Thread: Any recommendations for a good metal detector ?

Any recommendations for a good metal detector ?

My adult son fancies getting one and I wouldent mind one either if I could find a good local club.

Any recommendations without breaking the bank ?

    Hi,

You can spend anywhere from £100 to £1000 with a Garrett 250 (£190 ish) or a C-Scope CS3MX (£400 ish), all the way up to £1000 Minelab or Deus machines. I would certainly recommend a Garrett or Cscope to begin with. If you want more information happy to discuss over PM.

    Jonathan.

What the man above says, I have been detecting a long time now and use a Deus, while it’s brilliant, light and wireless it’s still a lot of money for something you may not use a lot.

That said second hand prices for Deus’s have come down as everyone wants the new Deus 2. Lots of other makes to consider like Nokta which are supposedly good machines.

Try to keep it simple as lots of the settings can be overwhelming to start with but most machines have pre programmed modes that work great, I would try and get into a club first or if you know local farmers then ask permission as you can get into a lot of trouble detecting land without granted permission, you can detect most beaches for free but you have to get a crown estate license which is free online.

It really is a great hobby and history comes to life in your hands, plus there is the nature, being outside, walking, digging exercise element to it.

    Enjoy!

Keep in mind many detectors that work on land won’t work on wet sand.

Some great value machines to be had these days. The Nokta Makro Simplex is hugely popular at around £300, and Minelab have released the Vanquish series at a similar price point to give it a bit of competition.

The main problem with the hobby is finding somewhere to go and detect, many farmers will either already have people doing it or just not want people poking around so get used to hearing the word no. Club digs are a popular alternative but are usually charged at £10-20 a day. If you live near the coast then most of the crown foreshore beaches can be detected freely (between high and low water marks only, no SSI sites etc so check for local restrictions)

I've been doing it several years now with a Minelab Equinox machine, finds ranging from fairly modern bits and bobs through to silver hammered and several roman coins. I try and get out at least once a week and find it very relaxing to be out on my own for a few hours.

If you're on FaceBook there's lots of club groups, I can recommend Metal Detecting UK - alternately there are fora such as https://www.metaldetectingforum.co.uk you can join to get up to speed.

Your failure to make an awful joke aboput having detected one on SC is rather letting the side down.

You won't get much better for that price, only thing missing is a set of headphones and you can use what you like for that.

I've got the 'proper' wireless headphones for my Equinox, but at this time of year I just use a set of swimproof wired buds and an adapter as your head gets a bit sweaty with the over-ear ones.
