Flann o Brien the third policeman is fantastic as are all his books , would not describe them as science fiction , more satirical humourous post modernism

Different direction but John Connollys books (Charlie Parker series) are excellent, crime, horror, some paranormal.

    Where next after LOTR/The Hobbit?

This is an interesting thread. I have been trying to think of non-fantasy/sci-fi authors to recommend to someone who enjoyed LOTR, but I am coming up short.

Maybe The Great Railway Bazaar and Riding the Iron Rooster both by Paul Theroux because of the journeys he takes into strange lands? There must be better suggestions.

It is worth listening to even if you have not read or watched his stuff.

I could recommend dozens, but these are good mix of history and fantasy-lite..

Bernard Cornwell - Grail quest trilogy

Glyn Iliffe -Adventures of Odysseus series

Robyn Young - Brethren, crusaders trilogy

Have to recommend The Fourth Realm Trilogy. The Traveler, The Dark River and The Golden City. By John Twelve Hawks. Which may be a pseudonym. And may lead you to want to live 'off grid'......
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

I am currently 164hrs 47mins into The Malazan and I'm determined to finish it.

I applaud anyone who has read it, it's absolutely fantastic at times but also soul destroying at others. I really don't think I could of stuck at reading it, however as an audio book it's all about the narrator, 2 different one's so far which I usually hate" but both of them have been excellent.

I'd definitely recommend to anyone who likes listening to fantasy audio books.
