Outdoor cooking is good so as not to add extra heat to the main house…though appreciate in the Uk if you’re in a terrace with a smallish garden and everyone decides on the same day to light up the coals it’s gonna get smoky and smelly potentially…

Clearly never eaten a cracking piece of bbq, or an amazing grilled burger over coals, or even your condescending use of gas.

Indoors is never going to compare, and if you’re worried about smoke, you’d not get your skillet hot enough to create a char, as your likely too worried about fat splatter.

Genuine question, are your burger patties grey after cooking?

I’d agree. I get very little smoke off either the gas or charcoal BBQ. In this weather we use it a few times a week. Can’t beat a rotisserie chicken or pork. Saves in electricity costs and keeps the heat out of the kitchen.

Do the burgers come in a bag, by any chance?

I understand your personal circumstances may dictate your preferences but a proper bbq doesn’t need to smoke beyond the lighting phase and tastes significantly different from your oven. And that before we go into slow and low.

Apparently some of the recent fires have been started deliberately.

Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

Ah, the smell of bbq lighters drifting across the gardens. The lovely smell of summer.

A bbq lighter that smells usually belongs to the same people whose bbq smoke abundantly while they char their raw chicken over raging flames.

    But they do exist.

I think this has drifted away from my main issue with discarded disposable barbecues being forest fires tbh!
But seeing as you ask, I don’t understand the fascination with barbecues - lots of men wax lyrical about it, to me it’s just another type of cooking, it’s usually the wrong weather for it here in the UK, and I’m afraid I don’t eat burgers at all. Lots of money and enthusiasm around cooking big bits of meat in the garden. Each to their own!

We do the opposite-cook outside then bring the food in. Mj2k recommended a great one with a hob on the side and my wife did curry there other day. Sod stinking there kitchen out for 3 days.

Out in Murcia with our friends at their Villa. We drove up to Murcia town yesterday it was the hottest part of Spain at 46c although we did see a Temperature reading outside the Pharmacist which said 50c. When we got back to the car the temperature readout was a barmy 56c

The temperature readout in a stationary car isn't really reliable

This ^. I've seen 35 plus degrees on the readout in a carpark, dropping to 24 or whatever the real temperature is within the first mile or less.

Same here. 35C+ starting on Thursday and it will stay hot for at least 4 days.

Again, we haven’t had substantial rain since the 2nd week of March.

Travelled to our office in Paddington for the first time in about 7 weeks due to a variety of reasons; heat, covid (myself and others) and meetings all being in other countries.

8am, I’m the only person there. 9am, still the same. Joined by a couple of members from other teams that I’ve never seen before.

Heading home on the train to let the heat out of my house and WFH this afternoon. Madness. To be fair, standing on the platform in the sunshine at 7.20 am was about all I could cope with, my body can’t deal with the heat at all.

    Saw that.

I don't like the cold but the temperatures in the South East recently are ridiculous.
    Cheers,

I lived in the UAE for five years so it's not that bad for me, except here the sun burns you a lot quicker than in the middle east.

That doesn't make sense, as UV strength will be greatest at the equator and reduce towards the poles.

I too find it's a very different kind of heat out there, temperatures are much higher but don't seem to affect me in anywhere near the same way as they do at home, I don't think its simply down to the lack of A/C in the UK.

  32. #282
After the idiotic abuse TV weather presenters got last time (as if it's their fault that it's hot!), it was interesting to see the different way they're talking about the risks and impact of the hot weather this time around. It was clearly a deliberate attempt to avoid the 'nanny state' bollocks the hard of thinking come up with, with far more focus on real-world impacts and considerations. Sad really they have to do this, but interesting to see the difference in tone and content.

Altitude at the equator is a double whammy, especially as it might not feel particularly warm. The UV index in Bogotá is often 10 or 11, in the UK it rarely exceeds 7.

I think it's because no one does anything outside during summer in the UAE, generally, it's only during winter/spring/autumn when people spend a lot of time outside.

Travelling in to Blighty tomorrow evening...turns out you can't hire a car when we land...would've took a daytime flight but there's no daytime flights presumably cos of the cancellations due to shortages of staff...Not even set foot on the auld sod and it's already gotten kafkaesque...bracing for a week of possible delays and stuff not working as it should.

CHORTLE...wasn't it for all of about a month back in the early Spring and I understood the boosteristic sentiment was that this early sprint off the blocks would be sustainable and see Blighty leave johnny Forriner for dust...Nowadays just 4 or 5 months on, Blighty has the fastest/ furthest shrinking, that's apart from the Ivans of course but then they've a war on, sanctions to cope with.

Rather than cook on the outskirts of London, and with the kids away, literally at 7pm last night the missus said let’s pack the tent and escape the heat for a few days.

So, spur of the moment decision but we are now sitting on a campsite overlooking the sea a few miles from Salcombe.

Will come back on Sunday/Monday when the heat has gone.

The tent is the best bit! I had 9 hours unbroken sleep and the missus had 10. She said it was the best sleep she has had in weeks.

My secret to camping is NEVER go if the forecast is for rain or cold. We always go on spec if there is a spell of unbroken sunshine.

Our air bed is dressed as we would our bed at home. Egyptian cotton sheets, light goose down duvet and feather pillows.

We are sitting on a hilltop with an unbroken view to Looe, Megavissey and Roseland peninsula some 20-40 miles into the distance across the sea. If it was a hotel you would be paying hundreds of pounds per night just for the views alone.

    You should try it.
