Beat his wife so hard that he broke her back and ribs, and lacerated her spleen. Nice fella.

    I’ll go with that summary.

Certainly wasn’t the founder of the hells angels that’s for sure. What he did do is turn super cool outlaw culture into evil organised crime and ruin a lot of peoples lives in doing so.

Responsible for growing from a bunch of guys in California interested in motorcycles, getting drunk and fighting into a worldwide organisation. Could probably only have happened in the USA.
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

Aha, that’s why I recognised the name, seem to remember a book about a Brit who went out to spend time with them so they would allow him to start a chapter in the UK.

For some strange reason a lot of honest people tend to admire thugs such as the Krays and Barger. There is no logic to it but it happens.

And mafia, just look at the Sopranos. Ultimately it’s a series about an obese scumbag

"The devil has all the best lines".

I think in the case of TV fiction, you can be enthralled by a tale without having any admiration for the characters. Adrianna is the only character I liked on the Sopranos, the rest were varying degrees of unpleasant all the way to evil.

This guy, however, is a real life scumbag, lauded by some.

Agreed, but something like Gomorrah does it so much better. You can get involved in the story and just as the characters become humanised they always find a way to remind you just how scummy they and the lifestyle is.

Also, I read Hunter S Thomson’s Hells Angels years ago. I’m sure he had stories on Barger but I can’t remember them. I don’t think he was organised crime at that point.

I watched first series of Gomorrah but it didn't come close to gripping me like sopranos or the wire.

I could be misremembering but I seem to recall Thompson attempted to step in and prevent an Angel disciplining his own girlfriend, this didn´t go down well and several other gang members immediately joined in to stomp HST...Barger interceded, possibly saving Thompsons life and that was the end of HST´s time with club researching his book.

Quite an impressive innings for Barger given the life he lead.
