Engine issues and then had to burn fuel to get under safe landing weight limit.

Happened to me once, took off, warning light came on, you can't safely re-land as your tanks are full so we circled Gatwick for 2 hours!

You can land over weight but it makes a mess of the airframe, brakes, gear etc and requires costly checks / overhauls afterwards, it’s also more dangerous than an ‘within limits’ landing.
The issue sounds like a compressor stall / bird strike, although no report of an engine shut down so far. The aircraft is unlike to fall out of the sky as a result of either but you don’t know the damage done and you would not want to be flying over the Atlantic down to Cape Verde after it happened
The pilots did the right thing, burn off fuel keep everything within the safety margins return and land
Apparently the aircraft was already been up for a test flight?

Can’t have been that bad or they would have found somewhere to jettison the fuel to make mlw.
