    Second car - insurance

Quick question: Insurance for a second car - add to existing policy, or insure with a different insurance company (if that quote is cheaper)?

Have done both. With separate company has turned out to be cheaper from experience.

However, I've had quite diverse cars where underwriters have varying appetites at different companies. So you might find if standard cars that one provider with multi-discount might offer decent deal..

Same experience as ASW1. It depends on what the cars are. Usually if similar it can work out cheaper on a single policy, but if they are quite different it's better to shop around individually. My current specialist insurer wouldn't even quote me on our previous Smart as it was "too ordinary". I have my two cars on a single specialist policy because of convenience, but it's actually a couple of hundred £ more than if I did them separately.

My Cayman costs less than my Smart to insure. All very weird how this gets worked out.

Admiral multi car has worked well for me the past few years for 2 cars. I've tried both separate and multi car and two separate policies never really came close to just having the one. As others have said it will depend on the cars and usage however.

    Thanks. I've gone with multi-car.

My insurer was always badgering me to get a quote for a multi car policy when the wife's was up for renewal, when I did it was significantly more expensive than separate cover with 2 different insurers.
    Cheers..

Second insurer as multi car has never been competitive when compared to two policies

My parents moved to multi car with admiral a few years ago and it’s been competitive on price, they have 4 cars on it and change at least one a year.

Just remember, most insurers only let you apply the ncb to one policy, so make it clear when you get quotes.

A good point to be aware of.

Conversely, presumably you could build up 2 NCBs and if you have an accident, only one affected# (though, no doubt, a general rise in premiums).

#And swap between cars if required.

I think you’re under the dale assumption that insurance is fair :)

I would have thought so, I’m insuring 3 vehicles at the moment, I’ve the max ncb one, when I thought about a second car the quotes were very low until I pointed out it was a second car. I apply the max ncb to the car which is the most expensive to insure, could probably shift it around if needed, but I’m sure the premiums would all rise if I had a claim on any of the others.

Not sure if this is industry standard, but with my insurer (Hastings Direct) legal cover etc. is on a per-car basis, e.g. two cars means you need to buy it twice.

It is probably NCD which it seems you can only use on one vehicle at a time. I had to keep one low group car of the road as my NCD had to be on one car or the other.

It's up to your insurer(s) if they allow your NCD to count, and on which car etc. It's a bloody con for most, and the industry regulatory bodies shouldn't allow it imho.

For my bikes I have a multi policy, which includes 5 motorbikes, I generally pay for the most expensive bike and then approx. 25 quid for every additional bike.

With cars it just hasn't worked out any cheaper going with a multi-car for me. I have two of the cars with the same insurer, and then two other cars with completely different insurers based on the best price for the cover I wanted.
It's just a matter of time...

Multicar policy but they break the costs out for each. I think it is down to the smart being basically written off in an accident.

I've had a second insurer "mirror" the NCB of my main policy. I'm lead to believe most will do this if you ask.

I think the key is to ask and make sure you tell them everything.

Depends on the car, I insured a 4.5 TVR with zero no claims for less than a 1.8 Honda with 9 years ncb.

Admiral multi car for us, they paid out in full within a few days of this happening on the day of the winds in February this year.
