How to find a long lost relative?

A close friend/family member has not seen or heard from her Dad since the age of 2.

Now in her late 30's she would like to find him before he passes away.

She has his name, previous addresses & DOB, but that's about it. She's tried the 192 website (paid £20) and found an address that he lived at in 2005 but nothing more.

Is there a central database for this kind of stuff?

I'm surprised that any personal info is available online to the public, given the new GDPR restrictions. Is there a central public census database that's accessable to the layperson?

Or does she need to hire inspector Morse to find him?

He may be on the electoral register, local council should have a copy to view, but if he’s opted out of the open register (as most do) he may not be on it. Probably the best best would be to join a few local Facebook groups and post on there. Somebody may know him.

Word of caution though, he may not want to be found and she may be disappointed if she finds him.

I think a lot of it will be Facebook and LinkedIn tracking down that side of the family and piecing the puzzle together until she finds someone still in contact with him.

Might be worth making sure he’s definitely still alive first.

Trouble is, there is a half sister & brother who she doesn’t want to alert as they may be unaware that their Dad had kids in a previous marriage.

So that pretty much rules out using social media or asking about on groups in the local area.

We have looked for him on social media but no sign.

Maybe we will have to employ the services of a specialist.

Does anyone have recommendations for this kind of thing?

Do the half sister and brother still see her Father? If so maybe hire a private eye to follow them. Alternatively just hire a Private Eye to do it all, but they don’t come cheap.

Maybe not the most direct route, but I have been able to track down (unexpectedly and not intentional) family all over the world through their completion or their children’s completion maybe, of ancestry and dna sites such as 23&Me or similar. Only as my kids were interested in checking out their family connections.
It's just a matter of time...

Does this not require the other people to have also submitted their dna to the register?

I was contacted by this firm a few years ago regarding the estate of a distant relative who sadly died with no will and no close family.

    https://www.titleresearch.com/our-services/

They may only deal with deaths and estates but you could ask.
