I'd probably go for a Citizen Ecodrive. There's an AW5000-24E on Amazon for under £120.
Son of a friend of mine is turning 17 in a few weeks, and he wants to buy him a watch.
Criteria:
1) Quartz, kinetic or solar (for ease of use)
2) Not too big, about 40mm (he's got very skinny arms)
3) A bit cool
4) Sports or tool-ish (ie not dressy)
5) Budget £100 or so.
6) New
So far, Timex are coming out well, as are some Seikos and Swatch.
Any other thoughts welcome!
TIA.

Possibly have a look at TK Maxx online

The Pagani Design interpretation of the Daytona and Black Bay chrono are interesting.
Casio GWM 5610 from argos
Tough solar
Atomic clock sync by radio for cool factor.
Almost indestructible
If I was buying something at the £100 price point this would be it
Probably the best advice you can give your friend is to double his budget.
I would have though a Gshock for a 17 year old?
Divex or Apeks 200m (or any other variant) - 41mm case

https://www.scubadivestore.co.uk/pro...-rubber-strap/
Divex & a nice nato job done ✅
Do g-shock 2100 come in solar now? I’d go with that he could then later add the Casioak kit.
Edit: they do - https://g-shock.co.uk/ga-b2100
Thanks all.
I have passed on suggestions to him.
Invicta Pro diver on Amazon. Smaller size is 38mm I think

Let the son choose the watch he wants. Parents are more likely to get the choice of watch wrong, especially after asking a bunch of watch forum members who are not 17.
Gshock is a great option.
But when I was 17, if someone had bought me one of these...
...I'd of been chuffed to little mint balls.
It's a lot of watch for the money.
Well under budget.
Though it is 44mm...
Saying a g-shock is a great watch for a 17yr old is like saying a JLC master is a great one for a 50yr old.
They’re not all the same, he may not have any use for a big blocky watch that does well if thrown out of the window, and would prefer something smart for a night out after his A-levels: who knows?!
Best advice is already given, at <£100, Timex, Casio and Ali Express specials (Pagani) are probably the best bet. Beyond that, the model is up to what he would prefer.
Pagani do a speedmaster ‘homage’. 100m WR, quartz movement. Probably about 100 quid. I’m very tempted to get myself one for the summer
