Seiko Kinetic Perpetual 7D48 - seeking advice

Hi all

My brother’s Seiko Kinetic is broken. The second hand jumps two seconds every other second (I.e. it skips a beat). When the crown is out to the first position, it feels crunchy and nothing sets. When fully out the time sets ok.

Any suggestions who might be able to take a look at it, other than sending back to Seiko for a service. Any independent Seiko experts around who may have an idea what the problem is and if it is worth servicing?

Alternatively, any views on potential value as is, or if fixed? My brother is open to selling it on either way.

Probably the reason the second hand is doing that is because the charge level is very low. Try charging the capacitor up first before any attempt to reset the time/date.
I don't know about the "crunchy" bit but mine will not do anything if the charge state is too low.
To charge the capacitor you can try using the "violent" version of the "Seiko shuffle". Swing the watch, face up, in an arc of about 90deg's back and forth for about 200 repetitions. You might find that the second hand ticks normally. You might have to "shuffle" for about 500 repetitions before any response depending on how low the charge is. If that doesn't work you could be looking at replacing the capacitor. If so I am sure someone here could help you.
As regarding a value check the auction sites for broken watch values.

I also think ( and I am no expert) you have two issues.
The second hand jumping is classic low charge. So wear more ( go for a run) or try the charger toothbrush method I think I have read about.

The crown is a separate issue and beyond my knowledge.

Hi. I dangerously consider myself a bit of an expert in kinetics and this is nothing to worry about. This module won't set when in power reserve mode (double tick), with the exception of the main hands.

I'd presume the "crunchy" crown is just the constant clicking of the crown, which should be adjusting the calendar functions but will be unresponsive until you change or charge the capacitor.

Easy job, Seiko will do it but it's about £115 now I believe. I do them for forum members at 30 quid but I'm not a professional, I've done hundreds of my own though.

You might have a specialist closer to home, worth a Google.

No I haven’t tried it. There are various YouTube videos on how to modify a watch winder for kinetic watches.

I used a braun toothbrush charger on mine. If you Google it you’ll find lots of info. Charged mine from flat to full overnight.
