Best ‘bang for the buck’ Seiko diver

My nephew is after a Seiko diver, but having a look there seems to be so many options available and it’s not a manufacturer I’m up to speed on.

Obviously this as always is subjective, but what do you reckon for under a grand and why?

Any pictures appreciated so I can show him this thread. Thanks in advance!

MM200. Because it is in a different class amongst Sub 1000 Seikos.

I would have thought it would be the turtle.
Available in many colours, looks good on lots of straps, obviously inspired by Seiko’s of old.

Turtles are really cool. What reference number as their seems to be a few at different price points?

The best bang for buck Seikos are those £1060 odd ones they sell for 50% off once in a while. It does happen if you watch the sites

    Best bang for buck?

I would say Turtle. Plenty to choose from too.
    Cheers,

I guess he need to filter a bit, eg size, quartz or auto, bracelet or not, retro style or not etc

Don't pay too much, there is always a deal somewhere, or a minty one on SC or similar.

There is a very nice black edition on SC right now if that floats his boat. Very cool watch

Thanks, some great watches and advice. Personally love the 143 above.

Should have said, auto 40mm upwards as he’s a big lad.

I rather like the new Capt Willard's especially on the green NATO. List is slightly above budget but I'm sure there are plenty of discounts to be had.

Here's a current prime example, not 50% off but near enough...

The MM200 suggestions are spot on. Different class from the Sumos and Turtles.

If looking cheaper look at a King Turtle or even cheaper a regular Turtle.

The SPB143 line is a touch undersized for me personally but are beautiful looking watches.

    I have had a few:
    Skx
    Mini turtle
    Sumo
    Turtle
    Samurai

But the SPB14X range gets my vote. They got this one close to perfect.

Another vote for the SPB143 line. Great size, great looks, reasonably priced and lots of dial colours to choose from.

Best ‘bang for the buck’ Seiko diver

I’ve got this one coming any time soon hopefully.

SPB297J1, the RRP is £1110 but I got a discount to within your budget.

They’re supposedly arriving in June but I haven’t heard anything as yet.

Best value though has still got to be the SPB079. As they’re only about £750 new on rubber and they were offered at a good discount earlier this year, they can be picked up for under £400. It really is a bargain when you consider that you’ll probably pay nearly double that for the same Watch with a blue dial (and bracelet)!

SPB range are pretty good and aren’t stupid big or small being 40mm. I have a 7.5inch wrist and they would wear nicely for day to day use.

Genuine best bang for your buck has got to be the turtle / mini turtle, based on size preference. Doesn’t matter which you go for, just a matter of taste.

Given the law of diminishing returns, I don’t think the newer MM200 and 63MAS offer as much raw value but they’re probably the best you can pick up for under a grand.

I wear a Seiko SRP Turtle to work everyday. Not too expensive, it’s automatic, and if it gets a ding it doesn’t look rough for it. It also works on many different straps, rubber, MN elastic, leather, nato, bracelet.

I really like these. Is the dial textured or is it just the paint finish?

Another vote for the Seiko Turtle. Plenty to choose from. Large enough for the big wrists and small enough for smaller wrists. The lugs help. I wear mine at work (not office based) on an uncle Seiko GL strap and it's absolutely spot on. Vintage looks with modern build. I have the same version with the gold/gilt style.

Personally, I would go for either of the Willard reissues (SPB151/153)

He’s going to go for an MM200 or similar when on a price reduction.

I quite fancy a spd143 and maybe a turtle or Willard now ffs.

    Thanks for all your help.

Aren't all these suggestions on a par value wise, and on a par with stuff ruled out like a sumo? They are basically all prospex, 200m wr, 6R Movement watches. I've not checked the shogun or turtle but the 63mas and sumo both have sapphire crystal. None of the bezels are ceramic (they are either coated steel or anodised aluminium), I'm assuming all have diashield, and probably all have the same lume. In which case value seems to me the same, cost varies a little and possibly retained value is higher on the LE watches but only a little. I've a sbdc059/spd081j1 and had a sumo before and the value seemed the same... Sumo had the slightly better 6R35 movement....I preferred the emerald colour of the sbdc to the jade sumo, that's all.

The 10% discount pop up will keep appearing but if you ask them, they will often give you up to 25%

Don’t agree with that. I only have medium sized wrists (7.5inch) and Turtles wear nicely. I’ve seen them on smaller wrists and they still look great.

Nor do I. I have skinny 6.75" wrists and turtles and Willards fit fine. Because the lug to lug is short on these models I can see at least 5 or 6mm of wrist either side of the lugs when looking straight on. Mind you, my wrist is pretty flat, if it was 6.75" but more rounded there would possibly be a problem.

I’m with you. I have a wrist just under 7 inches and I thought the turtle looked ridiculous on me, though the baby turtle is a good alternative…

My son has a black dialled sumo (the newer sapphire/ceramic bezel version) which has a really interesting case compared to a turtle or samurai. I even prefer the way the bracelet meets the lugs. Sadly it’s timekeeping is absolutely appalling, and the rehaut is misaligned (I believe they all are) but he really likes it. It does wear large though, much larger than a turtle (which I thought was pretty compact). Echoing others I won’t spend more than £500 on any Seiko - too many I’ve owned have had poor QC, gritty screw down crowns, lint on the dial, misaligned dials - you name it. But worst of all they’ve all been awful timekeepers. I don’t expect COSC performance, but a watch that gains or loses 20-30 seconds a day - necessitating adjustment every few days via the aforementioned gritty ‘be careful not to cross thread me’ crown is a pita!

Even on the latest the bezel is aluminium although AM ceramic inserts are cheap to get.
Time keeping on mine was poor, but all these watches being discussed have the 6R15 or 6R35'movement so all the same timekeeping.... Can be ok but many aren't.

The bezels on the SPB143 and similar are all hardened steel not aluminium.
