    £520 car tax

    From: https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax-rate-tables

Vehicles with a list price of more than £40,000

You have to pay an extra £355 a year if you have a car or motorhome with a ‘list price’ (the published price before any discounts) of more than £40,000. You do not have to pay this if you have a zero emission vehicle.
You only have to pay this rate for 5 years (from the second time the vehicle is taxed).
Check the list price with your dealer so you know how much vehicle tax you’ll have to pay.

Fuel type Single 12 month payment Single 12 month payment by Direct Debit Total of 12 monthly payments by Direct Debit Single 6 month payment Single 6 month payment by Direct Debit
    Petrol or diesel £520 £520 £546 £286 £273
    Alternative £510 £510 £535.50 £280.50 £267.75
So a car with a £39k list price would be the standard £165. If you spec extras so that the price goes over £40k, does it then attract the additional payment?

Yes extras count towards it. It is whatever the value of the actual car you are buying at retail that defines the tax due

That's what I thought, but was puzzled by the use of "List price" rather than another term like "initial purchase price".

It isn't based on purchase price. It's list price plus registration costs.

Didn’t think registration costs were included in the £40k, thought that was just list price plus cost of any extras. Mine came to £39950 but registration costs took it over £40k- I just pay the under £40k rate

looks like 2017 onwards i think, they are rip off merchants.
My household pays about £3000 in council and road tax to the Gov and in winter they refuse to grit the 3 miles of road from our house to the nearest main road.
They dont repair the pot holes either so your car gets wrecked.

If the pot hole is reported, they have a certain time to repair, otherwise you can make claim for pot hole damage

not that you get them any more, but it's in case of discount. My last car was £42k list but I paid £37k - I had to pay £500 road tax

Apparently they will fix potholes if you spray-paint a huge erect dick around the hole, or so I've heard
