    CWC Automatic Divers

There seems to be a few variations out there. I'm aware of the original and the reissue of the 1980 but what others version do people have. There was a nice example with a date window on the Friday thread. How do they wear in comparison to the quartz version? Are they noticeably thicker?

    CWC Automatic Divers

They are thicker and but not noticeably when on the wrist.
I have the 80 reissue and a 2012 auto with the cr@p luminova dial.
I keep meaning to pop in to Silvermans in order a new dial to swap it out. If it had good lume it would be the perfect everyday watch for me.
I did a comparison of this watch with a GSAR a few years ago. It has some detailed pics of the 2012 auto, might be worth a search if you fancy one.
At the same time they did a auto date, there have also been earlier no date autos (2000) with T dials and the lume on these tends to go a nice shade of light brown. This is the one I would search out if I were in the hunt.

Look at the 2002 models, available in no-date or date versions, powered by ETA 2824-2. The no-date dial is quite classy IMO, the tritium markers age nicely.

The 2021 auto date on the Friday thread is mine, I think. I bought this new from CWC about a month ago, and have been enjoying it.

This is my first CWC diver, so I cannot compare it to their quartz variants, but their website seems to indicate that the auto is just over one half of a millimeter thicker than the quartz, or 0.6mm, if I am reading it correctly.

For a 300m diver, the auto does have a surprisingly thin profile. I have been wearing it on a 1.3mm thick Crown & Buckle Chevron adjustable single-pass strap:

I went with the auto date because I use the date function a lot, almost as much as the time, and the new quartz offerings currently do not appear to include a date-only option. I also wanted the brushed case top, sapphire crystal, and Super Luminova, which is very pleasing.

I also considered new Seiko drivers in this price range, the Willard and 62MAS reissues, and the Marinemaster 200, but I decided CWC offers a level of quality and reliability that I would be more comfortable with, plus the heritage and design seem more authentic and appealing to me.

It wouldn't surprise me if it was an automatic 40mm G10 Fatboy, I bet that would sell well

I cannot see that personally - CWC tend to have designs faithful to originals

They do but they have form in producing an oddity or two every now and again.
Is there much / anything left in their back catalogue for them to bring back?

Not sure what else they couldve done really. They were never going to stray far from what they already offer. Its a nice enough watch but doesnt appeal to me enough to part cash.

Its not for me, although I can that it will work for many others.

The G10 is the only watch Ive kept with a quartz movement (from any manufacturer). It just seems the movement and case work together to make a totally durable and functional watch.

A mechanical watch no doubt appeals to me more, and would always be my preference for any other watch.

But when I put the Fatboy resissue on, I do wonder why I own anything else.

They have also done a W10 Auto.

    https://www.silvermans.co.uk/collect...ant=5319074051

Maybe they are making most models available with an auto movement for those who want one, regardless of how that fits in with the originals.

Call me a heretic, but I would buy one, but -

I have had a couple of G10's and currently wear a GS sapphire G10 most weekdays. I like a good practical watch and the G10 fits the bill for me. I have desired a mechanical one for ages. However, annoyingly for me, this new one only has 5ATM of water resistance and whilst I am not a diver that is not enough, so sadly it's not for me. Shame as the extra lume would be useful to me as well. Oh well...........

A hand winding movement may have been a good option for this, or auto with screw-down crown. I do like the acrylic crystal. It is a let down though that it is not something completely new.

Id love to be proven wrong, but I dont think well ever see CWC do something completely new. It would stray too far from the heritage that they pride (and heavily market) themselves on.

I don’t understand the watch’s raison d’etre at all, but, in particular, I wholeheartedly agree: only proofing a modern ‘toolwatch’ to 5atm is a bit silly.

5bar is a luxury, the Marathon equivalent is only rated to 3bar.
I have been thinking about this and nope is not for me.
I dislike the automatic script on the dial, I know why its done but the broad arrow would have been enough I think.

I think the lumed number dial is a definite plus
But why on earth not give it some waterprooficity🤷🏻*♂️
The GS with 200m, sapphire and long life battery is a stroke of genius in this military tool watch price point sector.
Why ever not with this auto baffles me.

I reckon thats only a matter of time. As others have said before, the GS is the only CWC that hasnt had a price hike in a while. Maybe this will be an opportunity to revisit that line, include an automatic etc.

I considered one of these as I really like the tritium tubes for easy low light clarity but again the WR was a no goer for for me.

I wonder if the 'marketing dept' at CWC follow these forums?! Maybe in our own subtle way we have 'some' influence over time and we'll get the watches we all want!

    Nice, but not for me.

I'd always thought a pheon would be nice on a G10.

If it had the sapphire crystal and screwdown caseback / 20ATM WR of the GS, I'd be tempted.

I 100% prefer the heft of the original Fatboy (and the reissue) to the later G10 cases. Its hard to pinpoint exactly why. Somehow its greater than the sum of its parts. The original CWC logo is a big factor, but the thicker case has a profile that I just love, its got a blend of vintage/utilitarian that just works for me.

The GS doesnt have the same charm thats for sure, although I still really like mine.

That's a nice looking watch. An earlier version of the subhunter I take it? Both examples on the CWC website don't have this pheon, and all the other pheons on the T20/Mellor etc are the much thinner version.

I reckon either Automatic or the pheon work, but not both. I'd probably be ok with either, but 50m WR just isn't enough so it's not for me.

Another poster said that the GS Sapphire version is clumsy. What should they have done with it? Make it 100m WR, use a smaller crown, and lose 1-1.5mm from the overall case height?

I’ve never noticed that the GS is thicker on the wrist,
Meaning, it’s not noticeable to bother me.
And the crown doesn’t make my teeth itch.
I prefer the pheon to either the words Quartz or Automatic
I prefer the old style pheon to the new thin lines one
