Try Cassario black spiced from Aldi. Like Kraken, similar bottle, but much cheaper. My favorite atm.
Any rum drinkers out there?
I used to drink rum years ago, then went on to JD for a while as everyone I knew seemed to drink it and the last few years been mainly gin. On a Virgin flight to the US recently ended up drinking a few dark and stormy’s and bang I’m back into rum.
Bizarrely for both myself and my wife, it’s now our favourite drink - dark or spiced rum with gin ale (ginger beer good too).
We’ve tried and like Kraken black spiced rum, Luggers and Bacardi Spiced.
Try Cassario black spiced from Aldi. Like Kraken, similar bottle, but much cheaper. My favorite atm.
I always have a bottle of this in the house

I can't say I'm a rum expert, but I know what I like and I like that.
For sipping - it's delicious...

I am not much of a spirit drinker (once or twice a year at most) so am hardly qualified to recommend anything but https://rondiplomatico.com is rather nice I like it with ginger beer (that’s the only way I can drink spirits once I have had my fill of beer)
Failing that Kraken is very drinkable as you have found out.
Edit Zelig has good taste as well but likely does not taint it with ginger beer,

It is unbelievably smooth and drinkable neat on ice
I’ve spent years and £££ on a rum odyssey and come back to a couple of reasonably priced ones.
Mount gay, the normal one not the extra strength is a great medium/light rum.
Goslings black seal dark rum is fantastic on its own or with cola, ginger ale or lemonade.
Rumbullion! Is very sweet but great to sip on neat with ice.
Kraken is a good spiced option.
If anyone mentions Captain Morgan we should ban them from the forum :)
At the reasonable end of the market price wise "CUT" is an excellent brand of rum. I've had both the Spiced and Smoke rum and both were excellent. Also Bumbu is very nice too.
But if you want to do it properly I'd go for Ron Zacapa Centenario 23 Sistema Solera Rum. Not tried the Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva Rum recommended here yet so must do that....
My friend is a big rum drinker and he recommended Appleton estate 12,Mount Gay XO and Doorley 12 or 14 ,these are premium sipping rums

I'm no expert but very fond of this. Made by Cuban women FWIW.
Havana 7 year old. Cheaper than Diplomatic but just as tasty
Respect the past, live the present, protect the future
I’m a big fan of Blackwell. I’m no connoisseur and I think that the connection to Ian Fleming’s Goldeneye - not to mention Island Records - might be a significant factor in my appreciation!

If you can find it anywhere, try a Tandulay rum,
Most I have tried are very civilised, even for drinking neat.

Sipping then the Diplomatico. Cheaper sipping and nice cocktails the Havana Club 7 which incidentally is £21 at Waitrose currently.
For something different you could try Vietnamese Sampan, if you can get it.
The overproof is delightful. I've not took the step up to fullproof yet.

I've not tried the spice yet, but will when I see it.
Goslings, or for a spiced rum I love Bumbu.
It's just a matter of time...
Thanks everyone, some great suggestions to try . . . . . I’ll crack on with it :-)
'Sipping rum' makes me picture a dusty cowboy walking into a saloon, and asking the barkeep for a glass of his finrest sippin' whiskey.
El dorado 12 is my go to rum. Don’t think you can beat it for the quality to value.

Well, sugar additives (diplomatico, zacapa etc) glycerol and flavor additives (looking at you pyrat xo) will all sweeten and or smooth the rum on your palate. This makes it hard for unsweetened rums to compete, if your palate is used to the sugar.
I'd recommend foursquare rums for sipping. Doorlys XO is a great starter siping rum. You can get foursquare rum under a variety of other brand names, real mccoy, rum sixty six 12yo, as well as their own premium "exceptional cask series".
Appleton rums are also good choices. Pussers and black tot are good in the British navy style. Smith & cross and Hampden lrok/the younger are interesting but very funky, maybe not ideal for starting off with.
Thought I’d try that Cassario that was recommended on here. Also saw this other one so thought I’d try that too.
Ron Zacapa 23 on its own. Lovely.
One of my friends drinks a lot of rum and I think he drinks Captain Morgan if that is known?

Santiago de Cuba 7 years is nice if you can get it
There are so many styles of rum, it is hard to pick.
- Plantation 3 Star is good for daiquiris
- Goslings trademarked Dark ‘n Stormy, using their Black Seal rum.
- Havana Club for mojitos
- Smith and Cross is my favourite, and works well for Tiki stuff like the Mai Tai (my favourite cocktail)
- Diplimatico Reserva has been mentioned - I don’t usually drink rum neat, but this is a good one to sip
If you really want to go down the rum rabbit hole, I’d recommend a book called Smugglers Cove by Martin and Rebecca Cate.
Joe
Can’t beat Wood’s Old Navy if you’re after something a little more manly.
This, fab rum

Can highly recommend a visit to the Pan Pacific London hotel on Bishopsgate in the City. The Ginger Lily rum bar has a fantastic selection to choose from. https://www.panpacific.com/en/hotels...nger-lily.html
