G-Shocks don't count so you can have as many as you want.
I like 'em square, hard to beat a GW-5000U-1JF, or on a tighter budget a DW-5600E-1V ticks plenty of boxes and is Flight Qualified by NASA to boot.
Quite interested in getting one but overwhelmed by the choice.
GX, DW, GXW?
Mind blown
Quite like the the GX 56BB or GXW 56BB, but the DW6900 are like £55!
Don't really want 5 of them, just 1 good one will be ideal!

All depends what you want from it and what's important to you. Tough Solar, Multi-Band 6, Bluetooth, one touch stop warch etc etc. There's so many G Shocks, I think the easiest way is to decide what you want/need then try to slim it down from there by size, looks, price etc. The usual reply on G Shock forums is go for the Rangeman first as it has most functions you'll ever need (GW-9400).
Also some negative display models GX56 BB etc are quite hard to read in certain conditions so factor that in as well.
You’ll hear a range of opinions, I’m sure.
For me, don’t worry too much about the feature set. Find a look you like and then decide on whether the more expensive versions are worth it to you.
I like a classic square (dw5600 shape). I use it for gardening, DIY and the occasional bit of rougher outdoor activities. I have no use for tide monitoring, step counting, Bluetooth connectivity etc, however solar charging is objectively handy to save me having to change the battery. A metal case is of no practical use to me as I use it as a true beater and it would get utterly scratched. I like the combi bracelet as I find it very comfortable, more so than the rubber strap. Lastly, I have no qualms with the legibility of the negative display.
I really like the recent releases with the high contrast screen but they wore a little too big for me.
I settled on the GWB5600. Now discontinued but I’m sure still available if you hunt around.
I’d probably start with a GA-2100 of some flavour. A really cool watch that is tough, light and visually appealing, a great into into the brand.

I was in a similar position and started a similar thread, which got lots of great suggestions:

I ended up with a Rangeman from SC and love it.
I think solar and radio control are good features to differentiate from other watches. Don't worry about size either, they're huge but wear 'differently'.

As mentioned the GA-2100 Casioak as a basic G or as a more featured solar and MB6 the GWM-5610u takes some beating in the vfm bracket.
Either of those are great starter Gs.
Many thanks for all the input! Very helpful and much appreciated.
I like the square shape, and the negative display/all black style.
So I think that gwm 5610 is the front runner.
I do appreciate the authenticity of the 5000 but probably more than I need to spend on scratch this itch

I'm also on the verge of my first G Shock. Need a watch to go round the world with, so it's a nice excuse to finally get one. Am currently somewhere between a blacked out GA-B2100 & a 5000.
Mission accomplished!
Thanks all and thanks SC/Mike(M1011)

Nice watch, I'm also a fan of the square G-Shocks.
This thread has made me think it might be time to get another Casio DW-5600E-1V.
Managed to kill my old one by changing the battery myself and forgetting to check the rubber seal was in place before tightening up.
Next time I went swimming...
...Dead **Whoops!**
This is now surplus having bought the 5k1jf .
