Where to find a new job nowadays?

My wife works for a total narcissist and it is REALLY starting to get her down, so I would very much like to encourage and help her look for another position where she will be appreciated more and avoid the totally unnecessary whims of working for a total git.

In my line of work I have always applied directly to companies where I wanted to work, as I liked their projects, ethics and approach, but that is in a specialist professional field where my options are quite limited. My wife is in more of a 'general administrative' role, so can work across a much broader range of industries as her skills are far more transferrable.

My issue is I have absolutely no idea where to look for job vacancies nowadays as the way vacancies are advertised has changed so much, the idea of scanning the back pages of the local paper are long gone (I assume).

Does anyone have any suggestions where she should be looking for local vacancies ?
Are there any decent websites which show vacancies searchable by location ?

I have heard that LinkedIn is good for this, but I thought that was more based at the 'qualified professional' roles (?).
Are recruitment agencies still viewed as an 'unnecessary expense' by companies, or is this a route worth looking at ?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Try Indeed to get a feel for what is out there. You can then set up a search that will alert you when suitable things are posted.
LinkedIn is also worth using as a lot of companies use that to recruit - and it’s not all ‘professional’ roles - I have seen everything from a physio for a football club to a CEO advertised there.
    Good luck.

Indeed is good. You can also fill out your CV on there which you can then just send to what ever job you want to apply. I also use the .GOV website also.

CV Library is another good one

If there is a company or institution that your wife thinks would be a good employer, it's worth checking their website for vacancies. A local college or university may well have administrative vacancies - there's a lot of admin involved in education!

I use LinkedIn and click around following the types of companies or industries I’d be interested in.

I also look at the best places to work lists to see if there are any companies I should be aware of and look to apply at in future. You can filter here by company size.

Best of luck to your wife. We’ve all worked for truly horrible people at times and the toll it takes is huge. Previously I stuck it out too long but these days I’d leave immediately. Hope she gets out soon.

    Thank you all.
These suggestions are already bringing up some positive options worthy of further investigation and more importantly making my wife realise that there are opportunities out there!

    Thank you.

She really has become so low that she now has no confidence at all and feels like she would never get a job anywhere else. We live very remotely so opportunities are often few and far between which doesn't help much either, but they are out there.

LinkedIn is a good starting point. Catch up with the latest 'fashion' in resumés: there are tutorials how to write and post (on LinkedIn) a 'catchy' resumé. Try to find people on LinkedIn who're working in the same field as you do and check how they present themselves. There's a lot to learn from them.

Nowadays, in general, there's more work than people looking for a job. Try not to be too specific in what you want. It can narrow it down too much. Be open for new horizons, so to speak. Recruiters can overlook your profile because you drop outside their search parameters when you've narrowed it too much.

LinkedIn also offers the opportunity to send you interesting jobs based on your profile. That's an interesting feature because there's a chance that they come up with an 'out of the box' opportunity.

You don't mention the industry, but in Health there are numerous Admin posts which might take her fancy - you can narrow down your search to regions or hospitals/GPs etc

I can't offer any help but I will say good luck to Mrs Maysie and hope she gets a job she likes.
    Cheers,
    Neil.

That must feel horrible for both of you. It’s hard knowing your partner is going through it and your options to help are almost nil.

One site outside of LinkedIn which I think would be good is civil service jobs. All roles seem to have a salary range and office location. You can filter by location too. There are currently 241 full time jobs in the admin category but this will reduce once a postcode is in. No doubt the application process is clunky.

Others have already said LinkedIn and Indeed, and they're the main places to go to. There are a lot of jobs about, so tell her to do her homework when she sees something she likes, there's no need to jump for the first thing. Looking at Glassdoor to research companies is worth doing (but look at how long ago reviews were left).

The civil service is a good recommendation. Regular and large recruitment drives appear regularly for the tax office. No direct experience required as full training provided. I have applied previously but my competency answers did not hit the mark.

Monster and Jobsite (if that’s what it’s still called) are both good as well as CV Library.

There’s also the good old fashion recruitment companies you can walk into, most of whom should also advertise on LinkedIn.

Sorry I should have also said how quite a few companies also have their own vacancies section on their website too

    None work for me now.
I’ve 46 years of experience, but “only” 4 years to do before I retire,

Can’t even get an interview for jobs is have walked into 20 years ago. Against employment law.
Can many employers guarantee me 4 years work!

Indeed has got me my last five jobs.
Check daily as they are regularly updated, and apply quickly as some close when a certain number of applicants apply.

That explains a lot about HMRC’s performance!

What about contacts through friends/former colleague? Worth asking (subject to the presumed need for some confidentiality).

Thanks again all for the replies.

All info/tips have been passed over to my wife who is now picking up the baton and moving forwards cautiously. There is no massive hurry, as it is more important that she finds the right position that just jump from the frying pan into the fire, but it does need to be sorted.

The Indeed website really does seem to have a LOT of positions, so plenty there alone to give her some hope....

It’s also worth posting a CV online on any of these sites as recruiters do actively search for candidates this way when they have a position to fill.

There’s a lot of ‘talk’ about enhancing a LinkedIn profile and posting various things to create awareness although I’m not sure how much of it is genuinely taken seriously.
