I've been driving up to the Midlands weekly to care for my old man but sadly he's no longer with us. I'm retired and with the belt tightening I can't justify leaving my X3 on the drive with only trips to my in laws in Scotland plus a couple of holidays pa in the South West it won't get much use.
I like the 4x4 style plus we've lots of luggage when we do go away so need to fit everything in but the main issue is reliability.
I'm thinking of something in the region of 10k budget.

Honda CRV always a good shout for reliability...2.0 petrol is thirsty but will run forever...older 2.2 diesel had a few documented issues but I think the later engines were better...
a good used Skoda Yeti - we had 2 - 4x4 with 2 litre diesel engine - did 100,000+ kms in one with no problems other than a 12v battery change
That would be Japanese-built in my experience. My old Land Cruiser is still driving around with over 350k miles on the clock, my taxi-driving friend in Egypt has well over 600k kilometres on his Mitsubishi car and in Africa and the middle east Toyota's reign supreme for longevity.

OP: do you mean a 4 wheel drive or just an SUV type of vehicle?
I'm a big fan of the boxy-model Nissan X-Trail. (I think 2014 was last date of manufacture?)
Had two of them over the last 12yrs - a 2.2 diesel and a 2.0 diesel.
First had more oomph, Second better consumption.
Great 4x4 system (2wd, auto-4wd, locked 4wd) - which no amount of snow seems able to thwart.

We had a 2010 2.0ltr which was a bit of a weird one as most 2010s where
2.2s and we loved it, it’s probably the only car I regret selling it never missed a beat in 5 years and 60k of driving

When i say a habit it seems that once a car has done it once it’ll do it again, its not something that just happens and moreover is a result of something thats happened, for instance having a flat battery or someone sticking a crappy fault reader on it.
Unless you need a hardcore offroader, then Honda CRV - all day long.
(This comes from a Landcruiser owner of 18 years; long story, short is that any Landcruiser for 10k is going to be 12+ years old and probably need a bit of tlc - tin worm is your main enemy). You're better off with a softroader type X-trail/RAV4/CRV etc.
My mechanic pal from LR reckons it’s about the most reliable model they have made in last 15 yrs. I had one and it was a nice thing, fortunately it still had warranty when haldex failed. I bottled it and sold it after that

Echo, but I’m in an old RAV4 for similar reasons. Your budget gets you a nice one! I did all the research and travelled to get the right car privately. Dealers were a disgrace at this level.
Rav4 are not very big though, compared to X-Trails for example.

I bought a Peugeot 4007.
It is basically a Mitsubishi Outlander with better toys for less money. So far it has been excellent, and the 4wd system is remarkably capable.

Up until quite recently I was running a 2000 MY Rav4 2.0vvti petrol. It was the first of the second series Ravs and I bought it off my parent's neighbour who had had it from new and had spared no expense on its upkeep. Predictably it was ultra reliable for most of its life BUT the fuel consumption was horrific. Taking it easy as one does in such a car I was still struggling to get anything over 28mpg from long journeys and significantly less on short runs. I wouldn't like to run that thing with today's fuel costs. I'm in a 2010 VW Tiguan tdi bluemotion now getting a genuine 49mpg. My fuel bill last week was £97. I imagine the Rav would have been pushing £200 and I'd have needed to fill it up at least once on the trip to Devon from the Midlands for a gig last Saturday.
Diesel Ravs have some potentially expensive problems. I'm no expert but I seem to remember something about head gaskets and flywheels needing to be replaced. I think reliability gets better as you move up to the newer model releases and at your budget you may miss the problem models. I loved my Rav but I wanted to flag up that some of the diesel models aren't as good on reliability as they are made out to be.

What about a 4x4 estate car, like a Volvo XC70 or a Skoda Octavia Scout.
+1 for the Lexus RX, I had the 400h and it was bombproof.

I've had mine 6 years, before that I had Land Rover Discovey's four of them. The Lexus is by far the the best 4x4 I've ever owned incredible car!
We have had both a CR-V and a Freelander 2, still have the Freelander.
Of the two, we prefer the Freelander - the diesel CR-V was a bit agricultural in comparison.
Yes there are niggles and issues with the Freelander but no more than other cars in my experience. And for simple things like replacing a bulb they are much easier to work on.

We’ve had Toyota Rav 4’s in the past.
Both faultless.
Toyota Land Cruiser practically bullet proof.
If I was to throw a curve ball, maybe a 4x4 pick up? A Hilux double cab, with the smaller back? With a lockable rear load cover, should do all you need, plus in my experience of owning many, practically depreciation proof..
We had an older petrol RAV4 as our 3rd car runabout and dog vehicle
Absolutely fine but drank petrol like nobody's business

We also had a Freelander 2...had that for around 5 years. Bit of a rare beast being a 3.2 ltr petrol engine - shared from a Volvo XC90.
Only issue it had, and no one could ever cure it was random hot start issue. Sometimes in hot weather, the car would not start for 5-15 minutes...would turnover but not fire.
Suddenly for no explanation, would burst into life again. Decptively nippy, a mile muncher and a nice exhaust note.
