Thread: A watch for each decade…

    A watch for each decade…

So, I’m having a bit of a rethink about watches. I was a serial flipper of Omega/Rolex/Panerai watches from the age of 18 to about 40. Then along came kids and the need for a bigger house, more cars etc - and coupled with the price increases - I drifted away from the Swiss watch world and spent a few years scratching the itch with micro brands - inspired initially by our host Eddie - then the likes of Sinn and Casio etc.
Anyhow I realised recently I missed a decent daily auto and have purchased a BB58 with the black dial. And it’s great. Everything I missed in the old Swiss watches, not too expensive, no putting your name on a list, and there’s just something right about it.
I’m still a lurker on various watch forums and a watch I keep returning to is the Tissot PRX - there’s something so 70’s about it. So I’ve decided to set myself a collection task over the next few months/years. One good modern take on a retro watch for every decade of my life on this planet. That means one for the very late 60’s, the 70’s, 80’s - you get the idea. I reckon I’ll say the BB58 is my late 60’s watch (I know that’s not strictly correct), the PRX would tick the 70’s box - the quartz version of course! - my GW5000 has the 80’s ticked - etc etc
I’m curious what others would purchase for each of their decades - cheap and cheerful or super expensive, it doesn’t matter - maybe we can all get some inspiration to buy some more watches

Why not buy a genuine vintage watch from each decade instead!

Lots of possibilities but for me the '60s reissue would have to be a PRS-29a.

Looks like you have 60s, 70s, 80s covered
90s has to be a seamaster
I’ll have to think about 00s

To be brutally honest - because I don’t have a decent watchmaker near me, and I want watches I can wear without worry. I also have large wrists which can be problematic. My cars each cost under Ł200 a year to service, I don’t want to start spending the same on my watches!

Good call on the 90’s Seamaster - although I had one in the 90’s like everyone else and wouldn’t want another. No idea what the quintessential 00’s watch is!
Btw I know the 58 is based on a 1958 Tudor Submariner so not really a 60’s design

I like the idea of one per decade or if you like anniversaries got one when you were born, 10, 20 etc.

I would advocate as defining watches of the eras (cost not factored...) but struggling on a couple.

    60’s speedie pre-moon-moonwatch
    70’s el Primero
    80’s Casio calculator watch
    90’s ???
    00’s ???
    10’s Submariner supercase
    20’s Patek Tiffany

For the 90s surely one of these would do.

Good call on the animal watch! - I guess the 00’s might be an Apple Watch!?!

Actually a plastic tag heuer F1 in dayglo colours is a bit 90’s isn’t it? Or was that a late 80’s thing?

    Definitely TAG for 90's

For 00's, lots of choice. Just pre-iphones and smart watches, so maybe something from the last days of watch tech at the time. Quartz Chrono, Eco-Drive, Kinetic, or Ana-Digi perhaps?

These all feel pretty early 2000s, and won’t cost too much to buy or own too.

Or a Monster? Pretty popular back then, and considered huge for the time (not so much now) but perhaps an iconic signpost for the monsterfication (horological term…) of watches that followed.

Nothing much interests me after the turn of the century, so will leave that to others 

    Interesting challenge.

For the very early 1980s for me I don't know what modern take would be suitable. I wore a Casio CA-901 at around age 10-11 at primary school (and I still have this watch).

Crikey, feels like they’ve been around forever. I do have one somewhere, brilliant technology etc but I found the notifications so annoying and intrusive I turned them all off. Then I realised I might as well wear a normal watch instead!

I lusted after one of those but never owned one. An icon for 80’s schoolboys, is that the one with a game on it too?

Yes, it was popular at school. :-)

Yup, it has the 'Number Invaders' game.

This thread got me excited for a while. Yet another way that TZUK has conned me into spending all my money. A watch from each decade!
1900s - done that. 1908 Omega in an apparently contemporary wristwatch case. Yay! I'm off!
Then I hit the wall. I can't think of any watch from the 19102, 20s, or 30s that I could work up any enthusiasm for.
1940s - meh, maybe, if I can find one big enough for my ageing eyesight to cope with.
I kick in again in the 1950s with a birth-year Landeron chrono, and thenceforth every decade to current is there in the collection.

30s/40s/50s (one of those decades anyway) might be Gruen (or Bulova, or Hamilton I think) Curvex watches. Some really nice ones around. Prices are creeping up, especially for all gold ones.

Agreed - but I can't read the little buggers! Anything under 36mm and I turn into Sherlock Holmes.

Ah yes, my eyes are rapidly heading the same way. :-(

At some point I'll probably buy a gold one anyway. I've lusted after them for a long time now so why not... even if I need a magnifying glass. ;-)

    Artistic licence.

And why limit oneself to one's own lifetime. ;-)

    A watch for each decade…

I’m just thinking of an iconic piece to mark each decade - just a bit of fun really, never come across a collection with that kind of proviso, and might help to create a bit more diversity in the watch box

    Yup, nothing wrong with that!

It's just that I think Mr Curta was noting that both my suggestions so far have been vintage rather than the modern equivalents you asked for. :-)

Wasn't singling you out, loads of contributions here have been available as vintage only and I was just pointing out the thread creep in case people had missed the original request.

For 2000-2010 you could include a Damasko. My pair are from 2009 and 2006 respectively, both supplied by Eddie when he sold the make. I also had a DC67 for a while back then. Also from that era, one of Eddie's finest, the Broadarrow PRS-5, although with less than 100 in existence they are hard to find.

I've been doing something similar but with vintage watches - I'm not there yet as have too many 60s watches and am missing a 80s & 90s but my ideal would be something along the lines of:

40s - Dirty Dozen (Cyma in my case)
    50s - VC dress watch
    60s - King Seiko
    70s - Heuer Chrono
80s - CWC diver or blue Tudor Snowflake
    90s - IWC Mk12 on Blancpain Leman (passed on a Mk12 stupidly..)
    00s - Breguet Marine
    10s - A microbrand.. so the 6B Mk3
20s - Too early to say what's iconic but I've already got 2 I'll never sell
