In case anyone travelling to PT you can get tax discounts when shopping for any good over 50€ + 23% VAT. Money credited back to card / cash when you leave. Happy days.

Worth booking a return flight just to fill your boots with Rolex (I hear readily available in PT).

Please keep in mind that the claim of VAT back from any EU country is likely to be systematically communicated to HMRC who will invoice you UK VAT. So the gain may not be worth the trouble.

Better than no tax discount at all though? As you’d be declaring goods import of course from 3rd country.

Just wanted to help out when tourists go shopping abroad - no discounts for residents.

I’d love to know how you prove you’re resident in England Scotland or Wales (and not NI)

I know I wouldn’t travel with a driving license, and your address isn’t on your passport

Quite bizarre that, why do they exclude NI?

I believe NI is considered as both in the UK and in the EU. It’s the EU bit that excludes any refund.
And I am struggle to believe there is no address on a British passport.

Your choice, take your driving licence or don’t get the discount.

And why does the notice mention 15%?

NI is still part of the EU single market for goods, so NI would be charged VAT in any EU member state

No address, just place of birth. Same as my Irish passport

It may be a deliberate mislead but I understand it as an additional discount on the tax free price. I believe Global Blue has discounts with Visa that could come on top of the Vat you are refunded.

Is this true? Has this actually happened? Just curious.

    Tax free discount shopping EU

What if you held a British passport and UK DL, but don’t actually reside there for more than tax threshold?

    1) yes it’s true.
    2) I don’t know if it’s systematic or on request. But most of the VAT refunds are handled by a third party (Global Blue, Planet) and now an app (Zapptax). Those are in direct relationships with both countries tax authorities.
Maybe more importantly, fundamentally if you claim VAT for your purchases and fail to declare them when entering the EU you are potentially defrauding your country (as they were not bought as duty free).

It’s all about where you are considered a visitor. It varies between countries in general, although it may be a unique definition for the EU. Paying your taxes in a different country is probably a pre-requisite.

Something to enquire properly I suppose.

In Switzerland (pre Brexit) I was advised not to claim the VAT back (by the shop) for that very reason.

In Italy last summer I did a claim more out of interest it was a very efficient process and I didn't hear anything from the UK tax authorities.

Swiss clams are almost always reported over the UK. Same day actually.
