    Genuine Omega 53?

    Evening gents,

I'm in talks to buy an Omega 'Fat Arrow' 53 from eBay, but the caseback numbers are a worry. Did they issue over 10,000 of these (I thought it was ~5,900), or has this been reissued with a new number by the MOD at some point?

Any help you could give as to the authenticity of the watch would be greatly appreciated!

    Cheers

Looks good to me but your best bet to be sure is MWR Forum

This is the right place to post
I think it looks good, but the serial number is high
I too though there were about 6k issued.

Hmm, there are a few references to discussions, but I can't access MWR as my registration email never comes through. I tried last year too to no avail.

From what I can gather through the snippets I can see is that not all the 5,900 6B/542 watches were numbered sequentially. The earlier ones were, but then all the watches issued by the MOD in that year are included, which accounts for this one having a number over 10,000.

It does seem high though (I'm not sure how many watches were issued each year by the MOD), which makes me think it could be a mix'n'match case and movement.

Has anyone else come across this before?
    Thanks for the advice.

I think it's OK. I can't see how it is a mix'n'match....with what? The case back only fits that watch and nothing else was issued in that case.

I’ve seen serial numbers in the >10,000’s before. I can ask on MWR if you like?

Thanks for the offer, but I've decided not to go for this one.

I'm sure that it's probably authentic, but I'd like to do a bit more research first. I'll try and contact MWR and finally get in to the forum so I can read up on the discussion.

A sample of five on Ebay

I've owned 3, the last one was spotless and had a serial number of 10XXX. Sold it five years ago for maybe £1900/£2000 via MWR, can't remember. The first one I owned was about £600, although well used.

Good references for the standard that the 53 was made to: Kenneth Gordon in the Horological Journal 2012, part 1 in October and part 2 in November.

I only have a printed copy.
