Cheap Sauvignon Blanc that was all the rage ~ 2012-2015?

    Morning TZers,

Does anyone recall the brand of Sauvignon Blanc that was available for about 6 or 7 GBP from most supermarkets around 2012-2015? It used to sell out immediately as it was so popular, and it disappeared from shelves a few years back. People would buy boxes of the stuff when it was put out on the shelves.

Very off topic, but it's really irritating a bunch of us on a boozy holiday!

    We've established it's NOT:
    Makutu Bay
    Oyster Bay
    Villa Maria
    Barefoot
    Wolf Blass
    Brancott Estate

Does anyone recall the brand that's no longer around?

I don't recall, however here is an article from 2013 which lists several popular Sauvignon Blanc's from that time period.

Perhaps one will catch your eye and help you remember!

It wasn't that one, that was indeed too spendy at the time (even more so now) though it is very good

That is a great plan. Unfortunately not any of those ones, but I'll have a hunt for similar grouped reviews to see if any names ring this very irritating and pointless bell!

Brancott Estate used to be called Montana but I think the rebrand happened before that time.

    Maybe The Ned.
It also may have been a made up UK bottled wine originally shipped in plastic tank.

    Wairu Cove??

I second The Ned. Black label. Majestic usually carry it.

Oyster Bay was the cheap Cloudy bay but then The Ned came along and took its popular crown.

Try Kings Favour, another NZ SB which is pretty tasty

Thank you all very much for all these names - alas none is 'the one' but it makes me think that perhaps it wasn't that popular after all!

I'll have to give a bunch of your recommendations a try.

    Thank you again!

I used to buy one called Kiwi Cuvee but it was about £5
South African Sauv Blanc De Grendel is the best value SB now for me
    Wonderful stuff

More recommendations to try! Thank you.

Phantom River isn't 'the one' either, but seeing how many quite similar names there are for these is quite amusing!

It's all relative really. It's cheap in the context of things like Cloudy Bay, but yes expensive relative to other ones.

Any wine under £10 is cheap as the majority of the cost is Tax and duty. The wine cost is only a tiny amount and hence it is cheap wine.

Pay £20 then you are paying much more for the wine and so should expect much better quality.

I would have guessed at "Oyster Bay" which seemed to draw heavily (so to say) from "Cloudy Bay" success and quality.

I think the labels were kind of similar too.

On a side note, if you have a taste for SB there's a lot of very good Verdejo around which is similar in style and even more of a bargain because it doesn't carry the "New World" label..

My quess was "Oyster Bay" also although the stuff was barely drinkable.
Nobilo was also sold a lot at the time at that price point.
We spent weeks in NZ drinking SB back in the Noughties and thought Cloudy Bay good, but not up with Alan Scott on the other side of the road.

My wife just checked, she thinks it was Ogio, it is the biggest selling Sauvinion Blanc she has ever had.

Sorry, just seen this - not this one no, but thank you kindly to your wife for the suggestion.

The group of us have seen all of the many many suggestions in here, and none ring 'the bell'. Definite questioning of whether it was just a brand that we thought was popular just because of our echo chamber!

She works in wine and Champagne, she was certain it would have been that one,

Absolutely agree. Better than many Loire SB's.

OT, but I'm also enjoying South African wine at the moment - Tesco Finest Stellenbosch Sauvignon Blanc and Pinotage are both very drinkable and affordable.

Don't tell anoyone though, and let's hope Sauvibnon Blanc isn't the next Pinot Grigiot.
