    Gas barbecue recommendation?

As the first thing I came across when searching for previous threads on this was from 2010 and declared gas as not real bbq, I’ll quickly add that it’s not for me!

My dad would like a replacement for his rusty old gas bbq, and I’ve no idea where to start but thought the good folk on here might have some tips. A quick google suggests an incredible price range so let’s try and stick below £500.

In terms of what he’s after, he pretty much only seems to do steak as far as I’m aware (which seems a travesty), so don’t think it would need to be at all fancy, though he quite enjoys a gadget.

And like all TZ rabbit holes, I am now completely distracted by another thread I came across on sous vide cooking…

    Cheers,
    Jon

I recently attended a BBQ with a Outback Hybrid BBQ.

Gas lit but used special charcoal cubes (reusable) to give authentic BBQ charcoal flavour without the hassle!

I was quite impressed and looking at one myself. Ive never been impressed with gas BBQs and always feel you might as well be cooking in an indoor oven / grill

Lava rock? The flavouriser bars do exactly the same job but don’t look like charcoal.

We bought a gas Weber for around £500 3 years ago and it’s been excellent. Also Looks just as good as new. As said above go for a Weber at your budget. Would highly recommend.

Agreed, but Mum is anti any frying/grilling in her kitchen so think this is dad’s way around that.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, nicely consistent for once!

Do make sure you can get the gas - we haven't been able to buy any since last year.

Been very happy with our Outback. Backed up by a Lotus Grill XL for beach BBQs.

    There's a point!

I would also maybe temper recommendations for a £500 gas BBQ, in case gas cooking is not what you expect/want. Sure if you know what you are getting, but if you like super-seared meat, then gas isn't going to cut it.

We can get gas - at least most of the time. What you can’t get are bottles unless you already have one to swap out. It’s been like that for a couple of years now. Pain in the bum, because we have a 13 kilo that we’d like to swap for a 5 kilo one. This is for Calor btw. OMMV.

Where are you getting your gas ? We have 13kg Green bottles and have no luck for at least a year exchange empty for full.

Independent garden centre for us vs chains has always worked for us. I call them up to check stock and then head straight there.

Never any stock with calor direct. Alternative would be to try flo gas from Homebase etc, but not sure if the regulator is the same.

We're in Torbay. There are literally dozens of garages round here that sell gas. It's a question of driving round till you find one with stock. I might have to try two or three but up until now I've always found a cylinder somewhere. There was a period at the start of the pandemic when you coulnd't get gas at all, but supplies are definitely better now. That said, with a 13kg cylinder, we use maybe two refills a year, so it's not like we're looking all the time.

I've had quite a few gas bbq's over the years as I bbq all year round 2 to 3 times a week. Last one I had was an Outback that lasted 2 years (outside with a cover) then fell to bits as it had turned into a pile of rust. Then bought a Weber for around £500 which is excellent, quality is a large step up from all others I've owned. Had it 3 years now and still looks great (again kept outside with cover on).

Exactly, the outback just don’t last the same way. I had the previous generation of Spirit for over 13 years and only the piece of thin metal inside that held the electronic ignition failed, the rest was rock solid.

Only upgraded to the 3 burner Genesis as a family discount was coming to an end & wanted to take advantage of it and a cheeky Minimax Egg too - was a good year for bbqs last year lol.

If it’s steaks he will mainly be cooking, checkout something with an infrared grill. The side burner on mine is superb, get very hot quickly and produces a lovely sear. Then cook on indirect heat in the main BBQ to your liking. Mine is a Napoleon but CharBroil make them also.

    Cheers

I did look at the Napoleon grills and they are very well made. I just wish they didn’t do the wavy pattern, it just annoys me.

When I was shopping every time I opened the lid of one, sausage nightmare sprang to mind.

You've seen that porno movie too?

Have to say - those infra-red searing grills look fantastic!

I wish I had included one in my search for a good BBQ

    Haha!

I did toy with the idea of the sear station, but decided the mess it makes outside the cooking area and all over the shelf wasn’t something I could live with.

Most of my steak is sous vide & then finished with this, so I’m guessing this is easier vs lighting the bbq. Old photo and excuse the mess!

Do you work on roads resurfacing by any chance?

I also sous-vide thick steaks, and then sear with avocado oil on a 300c deg skillet - while playing a normal-size blowlamp on sides and upper surface. Then pour over butter/garlic/rosemary and remove from heat while continuing to spoon the butter over the steak.

Got one for this weekend, but might flash up one section of the BBQ, where I blast the charcoal with a hairdryer to get right up in temp.

    Only until they spot me!

Costco used to do avocado oil but not found (or really looked) anywhere else, it’s great stuff for searing.

My cast iron skillet scares me when it’s at full heat, not tried the combination of both together, we are having steak sv tmrw so may give that a try.

Even with the smaller minimax egg it seems a ball ache to get it so hot just for a short sear, but will have to try it one day. Never thought of the hairdryer, but my air lighter for the charcoal on blow setting will be tested now!

Back to gas, cleaning mine this morning as been in hibernation through the winter as the only bbq which is not covered by an awning so is less of an all year thing.

The hairdryer gets my BBQ to Bessemer Furnace temperatures. Yeah- Costco still have that avocado oil and it is way cheaper then anywhere else (even Amazon)

I tried an induction hob with cast iron skillet, but it cuts out after a minute or so.

Where did you get that propane torch?

The main gas supply is Mapp gas, usually used by plumbers. The end of it is a searzall generic version I bought from Ali express and comes with the gun part that the end attaches to.

Not had the induction cut out yet when using. Do find it very annoying that if I’m tossing the contents about in the pan above it that it turns off though.

Our Costco never has the avocado oil anymore and assumed they had discontinued it.
