Thread: Suggestion for a present

    Suggestion for a present

My brother is getting married this year and I’’d like to get him a watch as a wedding present as I’’m going to be his best man.

He has expressed interest in watches before but never made a purchase. With this in mind I’m keen not to go crazy but get him something that can either build on this interest or become a day to day watch.

I’ve had a few ideas but interested to see if anyone has any suggestions.

    Budget is up to £1k
He lives down under and surfs so decent water resistance
Automatic rather than quartz (he was interested in automatic when he was looking before)
Bonus points for a display case back to help build that interest - he liked these when he was looking previously

Condistered seiko 5 as an option, maybe a Mido or similar but interested in other suggestions too!

How about a Certina DS, no display back but most dive watches wont have these.

    Something from Christopher Ward maybe?

A C60 or 65 dive watch. A bunch of colour and strap options and a versatile look.

It doesn't fit all your criteria, however, it does satisfy most of them, plus it's elegant as well as good for work, rest and play: https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/bu...l-ships-w-2181
The are available for well under GBP1k.

    Good luck!

If you can get through the ordering system, a Timefactors diver of some sort?

Doesn’t fit any of your criteria but since when has that stopped people from making suggestions-

    Omega Swatch:-)

Kidding aside, a display back on a watch with decent WR is a rarity.
Certina is a great shout ,IMO
Or a Hamilton Scuba Navy or diver.
Seiko 5 is a gift for people you don’t like. But Baby MM would be a great choice.
Personally would not give a used modern watch as a wedding gift.

How about the Christopher Ward Super Compressor: 150m WR, display back and the always cool super compressor look.

Have a look at the Seiko Prospex Black Series.

I think any of these would make a great present.

Many Seiko SPB fit the criteria.

Mido Ocean star GMT doesn’t have a clear caseback but tremendous value (if you can pick one up in AUS). Swiss made treveller’s GMT with dive watch credentials and 200m water resistance.

Hamilton Khaki Navy, lots of C Ward, Certina Ds PH200 are also options without a display caseback.

Doxa Sub 200 seems to meet your criteria?

Thanks all! Some great suggestions here. I think the display back might be the nice to have that doesn’t happen but there are some really good options here. Will look at prices etc over the weekend!

That mido is a good shout! Would pick up in the UK but the idea of a GMT to help symbolise keeping in touch with home is a something that I think could be a nice twist as well.

If you really want a display case back fancy a GMT and like titanium, have a look at these. I have one for holidays and am quite impressed with it.

As far as I’m aware, Mido don’t distribute in the UK, which is why I said pick up in AUS.

One thing to add is that it’s a chunky watch at 44mm. That may or may not suit the recipient!

For that price I would spring for a Sinn 104. Tough as nails. Reliable movement.

    Ah ok!

Yes just saw the 44mm, might be a little large.

I think that the grey dealer, Montredo, can get that model. Have to add 20% VAT to their quoted price, though. (Still good value).

Two very good suggestions in the Certina and the Mido GMT. I’ve always thought the Certina has hints of a vintage SM300, which isn’t a bad thing, and the Mido is a proper GMT.

I would go with this: https://www.goldsmiths.co.uk/Longine...966/p/17470267

Doesn't have a display back but you should also be able to get a discount. I got 15% on a longines when I last got one of these.

I'd go along with all the Longines Hydroconquest recommendations.

It's a nice watch (I treated myself to one for my 50th) and the brand has more mass-market recognition than many suggested here, so I'd imagine it'd be well received.

If used and something with less brand recognition is an option, a Sinn 203 chrono of some sort would be in budget.
