    Which G-Shock for Son's birthday

Son's 18th coming up and interestingly the wife has suggested a G-Shock for him.

quite apart from the "shock" of having my wife suggest this, I know nothing about G-shocks, so thought I would post here as many of you are fans. Any suggestions welcome for something in the £250 range or am I equally uninformed on the price for these?

Alternatively other suggestions welcome for something in this price range that's sporty, fun and probably in the 38-40mm size. Something Seiko perhaps?

The classic GShock 5610 square is very popular. Only £99 from Argos. Ask to see the box before you buy and if it has a U in the serial number it is the latest version with a number of upgrades compared to before. No U means it is the old model. The Argos staff will be unaware of the differences.

£250 would get you the rock solid GW5000 the best everyday square model there is. It's recently been updated so make sure it's the U version.

Solar, atomic, stopwatch, world time and alarms.

Just about perfect and not flashy.

As it happens I tried this one one today as a spring / summer item and it wears really well on my 17cm wrist. It’s very light and feels very comfy.

Watch shop ave a 25% offer on at mo and would suit a young person.

That's a good shout, go through topcashback and get a further 2.55% off. Every little helps as they say.

The full metal 5000 models (RRP in the 450-500 range normally) often pop up at half price too. Worth looking out for. Think someone had a 5000 model on Sales Corner recently too.

Metal 5000 sounds interesting - bit more premium without going overboard - it is an 18th after all.

thanks for the suggestions all. Will revert to my wife for her opinion as she is always right about these things....erhem.

Looks great, but a quick check suggests that it will be too big for him. He's a slim chap and has slim wrists so this might perhaps end up being a watch wearing my son.

Some of the G-Shock designs are quite polarising.

The square ones are pretty universally admired so if going down that route I'd go for that.

    Rich,
I would stick with the square G-Shocks as most other G-shocks are bit on the large size.
If your son is interested in sea based activities a GBX-100 is a square with tide/moon info and a step tracker for around £150.

A casioak wears pretty small, and there is the unisex gma versions if he is particularly slim. In fact you could pick up 3 for your budget in different colours for him with 5 minutes googling. Basic black, blue, and a bright one for fun for example.

My son had one of the 35th Anniversary gold LCD DW-5735D for passing his degree. That's a nice shape if you want something a bit more "watch shaped". He didn't want a really expensive watch for either his 18th or 21st as he thought he'd just stuff it up. You can't go wrong with a G-Shock in that regards.

If you want something small with hands the gma-S2100 or gm-s2100 are nice options as well.

I bought my son a silver GMWB5000 for his 18th and he loved it - in fact he wore it every day and it took quite a bashing. For his 21st he wanted an auto for ‘best’ and chose a Seiko Sumo - he seems to have developed a taste for watches!
I kind of wish I’d saved one of my old Submariners or similar for him but let’s face it - they’d either get mugged for it, leave it on a girls bedside table and lose it or similar. I think a nice g shock is a great 18th pressie
