Where can I get my watch serviced

    Hi,

I consider myself to be at the bottom end of ‘proper’ watch ownership. I have one watch, a Stowa Flieger Klassik 40 Automatic which I wear every day.

I bought it in Dec 2019, so think it maybe time for a service but not really being an active part of the watch scene I have no idea where to go - who is good, what price range should I expect, are there local watchmakers or do I need to send it off.

I’ve ruled out Stowa themselves because the return shipping cost to Germany is huge. And I assume I should avoid the high street chain shops. We do have some shops then sell ‘proper’ watches, is it just a case of taking it to them or are their better options.

Also conscious that it is a £900 watch so an economical solution would be good.

I live in Horsham, West Sussex, and would appreciate any guidance and advice you could offer.

I would try Paul of this parish.

Otherwise maybe TWR. I have used them on several occasions but only for warranty work.

You own a watch, and have an interest in watches. You are not at the bottom end of watch ownership. Collection size, value and knowledge may differ, but there is no rank structure in my eyes.
Apologies for going off on a tangent!

Is it still keeping good time? It's only 4 years old so unless there's a problem I'd be inclined to leave it and not worry.

The Stowa Flieger Klassik is a cracking watch – I've owned a couple and rate them highly. Good choice

A watch bought new in 2019 shouldn’t need servicing yet! Even if it’s worn regularly it should be OK for 6-7 years, possibly longer. If it’s not keeping good time or showing other problems it’s worth having it checked, but otherwise I wouldn’t bother yet.

If it's not losing or gaining to any great margin, just leave it be.

You'll soon know when something's not right.

Buy a Timegrapher. It'll pay for itself, not least by telling you when your watches need (and don't need) servicing.

Try Tim Hamit of ALSALWatches, 226 Strand, Temple, London.

    I would highly recommend him.

Quite right. People do exist who think they are a cut above because they have more and/or more expensive watches. These people are knobs.
