    Michael Caines Oysterquartz being auctioned

    A man of style.

At the other end of the sartorial elegance scale, I enjoyed mine at the time.

    I bought it from a Miami-based plastic surgeon (I wasn’t a patient…) which somehow seemed appropriate

Never going there again, after I nearly decided to buy this as a show-piece for publicity in our windows :

    Think it was with Dreweatts.

A near miss! Wonder where it is now?

Methinks the estimate (£8,000 - £12,000) may be a tad low.

I know these are supposed to be "come and buy me" prices but istm they might as well not be mentioned at all.

Yeah, can’t imagine this selling for less than 35k. Then again, what do I know?!

I saw somewhere that Rolex will stop servicing the Oysterquartz in the not too distant future. That will make them pricey paperweights.

One of these was on Antiques Roadshow last night and valued around the same mark without the provenance of an internationally known celeb.

I rather doubt that Rolex will stop servicing the Oysterquartz in the forceable future.

Rolex trialled the OQ case with an automatic movement first. My old 1530, bought from James Dowling:

Would perhaps be another option rather than a paperweight, should servicing become an issue.

I'm a sucker for most watches from the 70s and really fancied adding a 1700 to my collection. I didn't realise that even the bog standard steel Oysterquartz had gone up in price, decent examples are around £4K+ and I don't think that's palatable.

I have been very much in the Shelf regarding buying an Oysterquartz for some time now but finally decided to purchase one just before Christmas last year. I found a very nice example in my local Jewellers but was unable to commit until I had sold one of my watches to help fund the new purchase. Having finally done so I returned last week to purchase the watch only to be told that the price has gone up by £1500 to keep in line with current prices! Needless to say I didn’t buy the watch !!! Will I regret it in the future ? Possibly, but in the meantime I will continue to enjoy wearing other watches in my collection that don’t have the Rolex hype attached to them.

I have to be honest and say that I think the OQ has been undervalued comparatively for a long time.
Yes, its quartz, but the movement is wonderful, and the build quality compared to Rolex of the same era is tank-like.
MrsV has one and loves it, and I love it because its stopped her eyeballing any of my watches.

Hell's teeth! I've owned three OQs and I purchased each of them for pretty much that very price rise!

Sadly I think this is another watch whose price point has now exceeded what I think its worth. Which is a shame.
