Thread: Best songs of the 80s

    Best songs of the 80s

My mate and I have been debating this for some weeks and we can’t come to an agreement. Trouble is there were so many genres which were still hanging on to the 70s which spewed over in to the 80s
The best we can come up with is A Ha - take on me but I’m not so sure….. what you reckon?

Take on Me is a good start but it's more about the video. The 80s was so f**king brilliant it's an impossible question but I'm going to throw in You Make My Dreams Come True by Hall and Oates, that song is 80s nonsense!

Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd would be a contender for me

(although The Wall came out in 1979, Comfortably Numb was released as a single in 1980 with Hey You on the b side - criminally only reached number 10)

Sweet Child o' Mine was a bit special too

I like it as well, but if you asked Sting I suspect he'd tell you it wasn't even the best song he wrote that year.

I'd go with Cruel by Prefab Sprout.

Dire Straits - Money for Nothing

Not even my favourite Dire Straits song, but mainstream enough, and gave birth to the music video generation.

As I start to prepare the Sunday roast I usually begin with, "Alexa: Play songs of the 80's".

    Some good suggestions already.

I'll add - She Sells Sanctuary by The Cult

    Vienna Ultravox.

The 80’s was one of the best decades for music and there are loads of decent tracks

Doubtful, it was more a response to the music video focus that was taking over.

I'd go with London Calling, Love Action, West End Girls, Englishman in New York or Poison Arrow myself, but if this thread has already proved one thing, the great thing about the Eighties was the variety of quality music around.

Far too many options, as most of the music I listen to is 80’s or 90’s, but one of my favourites:

This seemed to be a worldwide hit - for most of the year, seemingly following my own slow travels around the globe.

    Clever song.

It’s strange, I was never into Morrissey or The Smiths back then, but now like a few of their tracks

I have lots of favourites but I think either Warp 9’s Nunk or Depeche Mode’s Just Can’t Get Enough is the most significant and impactful track of the 80’s.

Everything electronic we listen to stems in some way from them, but DM made it mainstream.

I was born in 76 so listened more to pop than any serious music in the 80’s.

Lionel’s All Night Long is a pop masterpiece and surely a top 5 all time wedding party song.

    Billie Jean - Michael Jackson

    Honourable mentions to;

Born in the USA - Bruce Springsteen

    And

Money for Nothing - Dire Straits

But I guarantee you that Billie Jean could go on at a wedding, at a Rave or at a top Nightclub today and would still get the crowd moving.

Kenny Loggins - Highway to the Danger Zone. A great song and will always be associated with Top Gun released in 1986 as I was about to start RAF flying training.

I could pick most songs from the Propaganda album 'A Secret Wish' but I'll go with, Duel. (This could be a very long thread as it's a very rich vein!)
