    Berlin Wall... how long....?

Looking at the piece of Berlin Wall in SC, I realised that the Berlin Wall has now been down for rather longer than it was up.

That's quite shocking. I grew up with the Berlin Wall in existence and yet now it's been gone even longer.

“Checkpoint Charlie” by Iain McGregor is well worth a read. The history of the wall from both sides of the divide.

I spent over two years in Berlin, both as an infantry soldier and an RMP.

I was there when the wall was up and when it came down.

Checkpoint Charlie was a magnet for tourist's. Got sick of having my photo taken. We also manned the Police post at Tier Garten to make sure the the Russian guards did the job that they were supposed to do.

All memories now, but some very good one's.

Who gives out the certificates, would love to ask them if more than one type of rebar was used in the walls construction.

The pics i have seen used twisted rebar and not plain looking bar.

Spell it out, you think plain rebar wall is fake?

Got this, bit small compared with piece on sale, from my East German girlfriend 1990.

    155km which is around 96miles I believe.

Boom, Tish. I’m here all week!

I am currently living 200m away from where the Wall ran in South West Berlin. It is now a nice cycle path as you can cycle around the full length of the Berlin Wall taking in the city centre, woods and lakes on its journeys around West Berlin.

It was a fun time, when we’re you there. I was with the AAC down at Gatow but I trained with the RMP at Bovi, our Troop Sgt was Harry Oliver, we might have some common friends
Most interesting but was getting a Russian ID to go over Glienicke bridge to go to the Potsdam mission house .

    Construction began: 13 August 1961
    Demolition began: 13 June 1990
And by that time it had already become redundant in 1989.

    So up for 29 years.

From 1990 to 2022 (ignoring months) is 32 years. Hence my "rather longer" statement.

If you prefer to measure to the point at which all parts (except for preserved parts) were demolished, then maybe so.

Which part? Kladow was the SW part of the British sector and I still have a bank account in the Sparkasse in Kladow. The Museum in Gatow is worth a walk round, our old hanger 3 has lots of good bits in it. I’ve got some shell cases we dug up in the woods around there. Luckily I was there at a time when the old soldiers and airmen were at the age I am now and were really interesting to talk to about there struggles. We saw rudolf Hess most days sitting in the garden in spandau when we flew into the camps. I’ve been back a couple of times but it’s no where near as decadent and wild as it was in the 80s, the west pumped so much money into the city to showcase it as what the west could offer. No where else in the world at that time could you be in a bar getting well oiled with a mixture of Brit, French, American and Russian army, as it was a military occupied city the East German police couldn’t touch you so fun was had by all, until the RMP fun police slapped your wrist when you got back across into the western sector. !!!!!!

You’ve all given this a listen, right?

Thirty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Helena
Merriman tells the extraordinary true story of a man
who dug a tunnel into the East, right under the feet of
border guards, to help friends, family and strangers
escape. The series is based on original interviews with
the survivors as well as thousands of documents from
the Stasi archives and recordings from the tunnel.
