A watch sourcing challenge - 70s funky quality watch for a 50th present

    Evening gents,

My brother is turning 50 and has requested a watch, he’s a big fan of the funkier side of the 70s, my challenge is finding a quality example of a watch. His budget is roughly £1,000 (maybe a bit more) and he’s a fan of chronographs (particularly bullheads), which places him in an awkward spot, not enough for an Omega / Breitling / Heuer or similar, but possible too much for a Seiko etc.

    Here’s ideas he’s sent me:

    https://chrono24.app/seiko/monaco-ch...GB&SETCURR=GBP

    https://chrono24.app/seiko/speed-tim...GB&SETCURR=GBP

So, does anyone have any thoughts of what would be best quality. If any of you have anything you’re looking to move on, please do get in contact.

I’ve been considering Sicura / Lanco / Lip / Seiko / Citizen so far.

    Cheers all,

    Daniel.

Would he consider funky 70's style but actually a modern watch?
I've a Stuckx Bullhead Chrono LE that I might consider moving on.
It's totally bonkers and I'm fond of it but I do need to downsize...

Here's a little youtube vid of it:

and here's an old pic of mine:

Job done. They don't come more 70s or more funky than a Pogue.

How about an original Poljot Ocean? A bit of space travel heritage too! A decent 70s example will set you back around £600 to £800. Plenty of fakes about though.

I wouldn't be so sure. Search for Seiko Advan and you'll see what I mean. Mine is fairly tame compared to some of the more "funky" ones with two tone pink and purple dials. I don't think there was a chronograph version though.

A Mk2 Speedy wouldn't be unachievable that far above his budget and are still a superb buy right now imo, they've barely risen in value in years yet such brilliant watches. Classic 70's design, rock solid 861 movement and wear perfect imo.

Tissot Navigator chrono would be on my shortlist.

If you want a reproduction of a 70s classic then Timex just entered the conversation and said 'hold my beer'

    Lots of, err, “interesting” watches:

    A couple of options:

    From 1975

    And from 1972

I also love a 1970s watch and Omega did some great stuff. I picked this up about 7 years ago and I think even the non racing dial versions have crept up in price so unfortunately will be out of the budget for the OP’s brother

Quality is not something I usually associate with Sicura. The phrase fur coat and no knickers springs to mind.

Some models certainly look the part, but the movements and cases are often cheap and nasty. I'd avoid them and look for some of the watches suggested above.

Perhaps a good quality (probably refurbished) Seiko Bell-Matic. Unusual, qualifies as "funky" imho, with prices now a good example will be £300++.

I was rather pleased a few years ago when I found a nice, brown dial, birth year and month Bell-Matic.

This seems like it would qualify as funky:

    Seiko 7015-7020

The above mentioned Seiko Monaco is a good shout too. They're getting pricier, so now might be a good time to get one.

Something a little different, a Memosail Yacht Timer:

And if funky is more important than chronograph, a Tissot T12 world time or navigator variant:

I thought of one of these when I read the criteria, lots of funky colours (not all original) out there as well.

Thanks all, some excellent suggestions. A MKII speed master would certainly fit the bill perfectly, but I suspect would be well out of budget for all but the most beaten up of examples these days.

Got this a week or two ago for just over £1k (got lucky though, must admit, probably worth twice as much) - This watch IS the 70's, period! Love the chunk of it, I was left broke after buying it, but no regrets!
(Sorry for the double post, just posted the same pic in the Friday 18th thread)

I really doubt that you’d get a half decent MKii within budget.

Somewhere in the region of £150 would have won you this funky seventies Citizen.

    Sadly I missed out

A small update, after a *lot* of back-and-forth, he found this on Chrono24 in Switzerland and went for it. It seems in good condition and has been serviced so will hopefully serve him well, he is delighted anyway. Thanks for the excellent suggestions and guidance:

I was going to suggest a Seiko Sports Timer Bullhead, but I think the Pogue aces it purely on dial / bezel colours.

All should be available for your budget, and the Spaceview is “72”
