Chrono24 - Buying from EU seller

    Hi All,

    Hope everyone's good this Wednesday!

I'm interested in buying a watch from a dealer on Chrono24 based in Germany. If I go ahead, will I need to pay import duty or VAT on it when it arrives in the UK? Also, if I needed to return the watch for a refund for any reason, what happens if I've already paid import duty or VAT?

Be great to know if anyone has done something similar and how it all worked out.

    Cheers!

    As I understand it

will I need to pay import duty on it when it arrives in the UK? - yes

if I needed to return the watch for a refund for any reason, what happens if I've already paid import duty? - tough you have paid. You can’t get a refund on the duty as far as I am aware.

Import duty, no. (Usually not in practice).

    VAT, yes.

Customs Duty, Excise Duty, and VAT are all different things. In practice, only VAT is charged on watch imports.

I think it is possible to get a refund on import taxes if returning the item after receiving it and paying the taxes but I've not done it and I no longer know the details. It's not made as simple as paying the import taxes.

I bought my first watch via Chrono24 & from a German seller a couple of months ago. I expected to pay VAT but so far I haven’t had a bill for it.

How much was the watch if you don't mind me asking?

Those figures are what I would expect.
If HMRC were dealing with payment they never bothered with duty as it’s value is negligible (20p).

It was about £300 so maybe not worth their while

    Some information that may help.

I bought a watch part on eBay (Item was in Italy), It was on an auction, and I bid/won at £110.

When I went to the checkout to pay, ebay had added the 20%, so I had to pay £132.

I didn't consider this when bidding, and assumed I would (maybe) get a bill when it arrives.

    Another Brexit Bonus!
