Network assistance for a numpty please

I am struggling a bit and feel very stupid.

I have a NAS installed (Netgear) but I am not using it for a thousandth of what I could so I had decided to look into it a bit more. I can see it on my Finder (all-Mac house), and put files on it.
But I tried to go into Readycloud.
I hadn't gone there for so long that my account needed to be updated. Followed a fairly useless series of trial and error to find which email had been used: I have tried them all and nothing.
I then thought that, whilst unlikely, I was well capable of not having set it up in the first place. So I thought I could just create a new one.
My initial attempt at getting the NAS discovered by Readycloud failed, but they provide a useful little app (Netgear RAIDar) that soon found it. All was good again.

Until that is it asked me to log in into my IP address. And this is where I am: I have no idea of what the username should be (I've tried loads) nor the PW.
And to make matters worse, after a while the system tells me that password recovery has not been set on the device and that it is not available.

    ... --- ...

    TIA

(and please speak to me using simple words )

It doesn’t really sound like a network issue. And I am not a Mac guy so I don’t even know what some of the words you are using are. However, assuming you are being asked to login to the NAS from this app then you are probably goosed unless you know the details. I recommend a password manager in future.

In your position, assuming I could see all the data on the NAS on the MAC, I’d be tempted to copy it all off and then reset the device following whatever process the manufacturer recommends. Then start again and remember the username/password this time.

Just an idea to consider, hopefully someone with an even brighter one will be along soon!

If its the NAS you're trying to log in to have you tried username admin and password password?

I think they're the factory default and it sounds like you might never have updated them.

Otherwise try Googling the Netgear Knowledge Base.

I know the system you’re trying to log into as I have a similar one. I can check the default password and log-in as I still have the manual somewhere.

I have tried admin and password

Basically I am trying to log in my NAS' IP address (which is why I was speaking of Network)
I was hoping I'd find it in my keychain but it's not there...

And I do use Dashlane... but I didn't at the time.

Are any of the shares available on the NAS?

Not familiar with the Mac but on a Windows PC you could go the 'Run' field and type \\IP address\ and that might show any visible shares.

I'm sure it's possible to reset the login username and password without affecting the data on the device. What model of Netgear NAS is it?

    I't's a ReadyNAS 104
The thing is, I can download the logs (I have no idea why I would do that, nor do I know where they are, but I have the password to get in this one. It's just the admin page I cannot access.

This is what it says in the manual for the ReadyNAS I have:

    admin
    netgear1

    Maybe worth a try.

Thank you all. I've tried them, but no luck.
I need to understand what I need to do to reset the whole thing. I don't have so much stuff on it that it's unmanageable, but I need to do it properly so that I can use the NAS a little more than I did.

Just to emphasise the point you do know you’ll loose all the data on the nas when you reset it?

I’m sure you did but just in case make sure you back up any vital data.

Also I’d be suspect about exposing your nas to the outside world, given the resent ransomware attacks on Qnap nas devices where folk have had their data encrypted and held to ransom.

I suspect that Netgate are likely more security focused but unless there is a vital need to expose your home nas to the internet then why risk it.

    Good luck with the rebuild.

This article on the Netgear Knowledge Base sets out how to do an OS reinstall which resets the login back to factory default without affecting the data.

Dont know if this is relevant to your product, but it might be a starting point.

Thank you for that. I was thinking of opening it up to allow my daughter (who is boarding) access to the storage facility. I'll be honest and confess I don't have any clue on how to make it more secure than it would be with the tools provided by default.
