I'm going to be returning to the UK fairly soon and one of the things I'll be doing is trying to sell my watch collection. I'm not sure I'll have enough time to sell them individually (unless anyone here has a specific wtb I guess) and was thinking of putting them into a specialized watch auction.
They are mostly divers models and mostly vintage - the auction houses that readily spring to mind are Fellows, Sterling Vault, Watches of Knightsbridge, Chiswick & McTears. I'm not sure the quality would be up to Antiquorum or Sotheby's standard for most of the items & their fees & commission would probably be fairly daunting.
Does anyone here have any experience with any of them? Or can suggest a better method of sale. I was thinking of offering them as a discounted job lot on SC so someone else could sell them but there'll be about 140 so that might take awhile.

I was an interested bystander when a friend disposed of most ofhis collection through WoK. They were very nice and did him a deal on seller's commission, but this was a while ago before both sets of commissions raised considerably.
Depending on the desirability, i would probably opt for a commission sale at a well regarded vintage dealer, if you were keen on saving time and effort.
Doing it all yourself should net yyou 15-20% more, which for tthat any watches should be quite a sum.

I’ve often wondered how I would do this too if the circumstances made it necessary, I had thought about setting up a website to showcase the watches, for a one off sale, would that make you a dealer and subject to distance selling rules and suchlike? Would it make any difference if you made it clear it is a ‘private sale’ with no warranty etc?

Reminds me, I really need to get round to documenting my (much smaller, much less impressive) collection in a spreadsheet ...
Wowza, that's a lot of watches.
If it were me, I'd have a big photo session with the lot and get a generic sales template written up that you can utilise with amends for each listing (e.g. model, age, condition etc).
Then I'd focus on the heavy hitters and seek valuations from a big dealer (e.g. Watchfinder) and eBay sold listings as a baseline. I'd them list them here first (although bear in mind you're in dealer category so that's a 10% charity donation, but that sits alot better than paying fees to auctions IMO). If they don't sell here, then either take the dealer offer if it's palatable or get them on eBay/auction house.
For the non-heavy hitters, I'd just be looking at eBay to get them shifted on a reduced fees weekend (regularly it's 80% off fees these days). Even so I'd consider spacing them out a little bit so you're not competing with yourself for bids.

I think you have a problem.
I also, think I’ve identified why the U.K. has a supply problem.
Some rare watches in there, you don’t see too many Jenny Caribbean watches listed for sale. Not so sure about the Ben Sherman though. A specialist watch auction might be a plan, I’m sure they will cherry pick the better watches, but if you can haggle a good sellers fee it might be worth while.
SC and e-bay might be useful for some of the cheaper items, but as mentioned that involves packaging and numerous trips to the PO, although they do collect these days.

If mine I'd try a known watch fair to at least reduce that amount faster with less hassle of all the packing,trips to the PO,less stress too I'd say.
But dont go alone!,you would need plenty eyes on that collection with people wanting to look etc etc.
I would talk to Adrian Hailwood at Collecting Watches about what they might do in terms of commission cuts for multiple pieces. Not sold on there but I know Adrian and he’s a very stand up guy and at least worth a chat I would have thought. Ex Fellows.

I'm going to swim against the current here, and suggest that the big ticket numbers - the Rolexes (of course), the IWC (hit me up), the Omegas, the vintage Certinas, O&W, Jennys - sell 'em on here. You'll get a good price, and what's three a week in terms of P&P and trips to the PO? (And three a week stops the boss from classifying you as a dealer!)

You've quite a task ahead, but like someone already said the cheaper stuff will filter through on ebay or sale corner and Rolex sell themselves... I bet you've got offers on them all already- you've maybe a third of your collection that'll take a bit of work to get moved on
I agree, save yourself the commission. Sell here. You are clearly organised enough to do so. You may get some values slightly wrong, but not many.

I’ll support the suggestion of sales corner, if only to see some photos of some of your awesome watches. Perhaps Chrono24 is also an option. It’s not free but would perhaps allow you to cast the net a bit wider than here and without having to deal with things like the Ebay crowd.

The logical thing to do, time notwithstanding, is to break the collection up into cohorts that bring the best return with the least hassle e.g. decide which watches perform best under:
Sell to a dealer
Auction house
Ebay
Sales Corner
Different watches achieve different prices under each, there's plenty of watches a dealer wouldn't want but which are marketable elsewhere.
The more effort you put in, the better the return, I'd be surprised if anyone was willing to buy the job lot at a fair price, you'd likely be giving some of them away.

I know it would be hassle but selling here would get good returns plus add a lot of nice watches within the forum, yes some would be scalped off by hoovers/dealers but priced right I'm sure you would do well.

Some lovely watches there. I would try and sell the better/rarer ones separately. I might take very slightly longer, but it’s doable. I sold just under 30 watches not too long ago in order to buy my new house - I wasn’t that long to get the funds together that I needed.
