    Any soldering gurus?

I happened upon this soldering set up by means of payment
Looks pretty top notch (few on eBay)
Can’t seem to attach the iron to the station
Any help would be appreciated - I’ve a little job to do fitting a usb to my bike for sat nav/ phone

Is the Weller soldering iron actually meant to connect to the OK SA1000 soldering system?

    I don't know the answer but it's a key question. ;-)

The soldering iron should plug into the front of the box. Is the plug on the soldering iron lead compatible with the socket on the box?

    Ah, beaten to it. ;-)

Looks like it needs a special fitting to attach it.

Sort of appears that the inner piece of the irons connector wants to slide back?

There should be a plug on the end of the iron's cable that fits into the socket on front bottom right of the SA1000. I don't know if you've soldered before but if not u-tube is your friend.

As above posts, too slow me, soz.

It looks like they should fit, doesn't it.

I note that the outer bayonet lock down ring on the plug has a tab that needs to fit into the outer slot at 12 on the ring on the socket. If the tab and the slot are not lined up then the plug might not slide in properly.

I can't tell for sure at the socket and plug are compatible, but it looks like the notch in the plastic outer shroud and the notch in the metal plug housing are not aligned. I would normally expect to align the inner notch with the socket on the base unit and then rotate the outer plastic shroud until it clicked into place, and rotate it clockwise to lock.

If that's a reply to me then I deleted the earlier message in which I said I thought they were incompatible because I realised it was wrong. I apologise. I was incorrectly visualising the plug in a mirror form until I looked at the higher resolution image!

I now think that they are in fact compatible. I think you need to get the bayonet lock ring tab on the plug to line up with the slot at 12 on the socket.

I think you need to buy the correct iron to use the features of the base station.

OK are a bit old hat now , people who do it for a living use JBC or Metcal

Probably repeating what’s already been said but the pins in the soldering iron plug look to be too large to fit the base station?

I thought so too at first but when I looked at the hi res image at https://www.flickr.com/photos/37686614@N07/51852392666/ I could see that the pins on the plug are split pins and are intended to press together when inserted into the socket.

I thought it was good advice - that powerpack is for serious quantity/quality soldering, which if you were involved in - would probably be familiar with the connections for the irons.

A cheap weller with holder is sufficient for most users.

Oh, interesting. I see what you mean about one part seeming to need to slide back now.

Does that thing that looks like a button on top of the plug do anything, like release a catch?

I had a look when I got to work, its a very old rework station base, it drives a soldering iron or tweezers the iron should have tip extraction, you could ask OK industries if a Metcal iron will work but it will be £150 plus, I had a look in our graveyard, we haven't got any OK irons laying about, only solder suckers.

The reason professional soldering irons are so expensive is control and accuracy, if we used hobbyist irons we would spend thousands a month just on tips.

You need the base station with the punp inside, we use these hot air stations now they are much more versatile https://kaisertech.co.uk/quick861dw-...rework-station
