The Annual Friday Watch Awards Ceremony 2022

Ladies and Gentlemen, good evening and welcome to the second annual TZ-UKFWT awards ceremony. A chance to review the highs (yes we had some) and lows (oh what lows they were, a particular one in Poole springs to mind) of Friday watch wearing during 2021. The hard working events team have been plotting and planning another entertaining evening of watch related frivolity. However they have fallen at the first hurdle as, yet again, we have been denied access to the Dorchester's ballroom. Apparently us kind and gentle watch enthusiasts have been given a bad name after the crazy hedonists over at The Watch Forum trashed the joint during their annual Bacchanalia back in October. So we find ourselves banished to another virtual event. Despite this little set back I am sure you will enjoy yourselves. Before I go any further I would like to thank you for making the effort to dress up for the occasion, although it seems that, in these days of Zoom and Teams, dressing up means a decent shirt and, if you can be bothered, pyjama bottoms. I am also glad to see that those of you who, last year, wore nothing but a black tie have learnt from their misunderstanding.

I hope that you'll agree that tonight's Swag Bag, courtesy of that magnificent emporium Sales Corner, is really quite special. This year it comes in the form of a hand crafted, full grain leatherette tactical man bag. Lifting the flap you will find it has been lined in a striped, 100% cotton jersey fabric. If you find your bag has a fetching navy and purple striped lining you may notice the freshly laundered smell. Be thankful for that small mercy. Within the swag bag you will find an assortment of treasures. A Cadbury's mini roll to keep the hunger at bay, a vintage copy of either Classic Car Weekly or Scootering and a lifetime's supply of shaving soap. In keeping with the personal grooming theme there is a sample bottle of Gentleman's fragrance. However, due to supply chain problems, there wasn't enough to go around so we have made up the numbers with malt whisky. A word of warning, during the process of decanting both liquids the labelling of the sample bottles became confused so we advise you to "sniff before you swig" to avoid any unpleasant surprises. The piéce de resistance of this year's swag bag is your very own "cherished" number plate which has been hand picked for each member by our esteemed landlord Eddie. I am sure whatever it spells out does not necessarily reflect what he thinks of you. Once gain, at the bottom of the bag you will find a small envelope, not, as you may think for bribing the judging panel for the prestigious Watch of The Year (that can only be done with the watches themselves) but for giving to the fundraiser. If you have enjoyed this evening please give generously to the New Fundraiser.

Flushed with the success of last years entertainment the events team have pulled a few strings and scraped a couple of barrels to provide an exceptional line up yet again. As guest speakers we have a very famous double act who, over the last two years, have frequently hit the headlines and barely been off of our TV screens. No not Ant and Dec (they probably heard that sigh of relief up in Newcastle) it is that other well known double act and Knights of the Order of the Bath; Sir Christopher Whitty and Sir Patrick Vallance. As well as regaling you with tales of their early lives and how they reached stardom they will amaze you with their "Double Straight Man" routine which is, understandably, unique in the Comedy world.

After their rousing performance last year we politely asked the Bear Pit Regulars to return to provide the musical interlude but after their rude response, which can not be repeated on this part of the forum, our talent scout hunted around the quieter parts of the forum and discovered that we had our very own covers band (who knew?). Please welcome to the stage The Forum Police. They will play a few especially adapted tracks such as: Secret Journey (to buy a watch); I can't stand losing you (so I'll buy you back for far more than I sold you) and Driven to Tears (by my AD). Especially for the Omega fans here tonight they will also perform Omegaman and Walking on the Moon.

Right, enough fun and games, let us get down to the serious matter of this years numbers. Last year was a rare one as there were 53 Fridays (I am led to believe that has a probability of 0.177 ) which I am sure is very portentous. Over those 53 Fridays we wore 7965 watches which is 433 fewer than last year despite the extra day. This works out at approximately 150.3 watches per week. The highest weekly total was counted on the 18th of March when 198 watches were worn (higher than last year's total). The lowest scoring week was the 1st of October with only 111 (six more than last years lowest).

January was our highest scoring month with a total of 821 watches, the lowest month was September with a miserly 521 which is 63 fewer than last year's minimum. However these figures are skewed by the number of Fridays in each month so looking at the weekly averages per month helps comparisons. March had the highest weekly average of 184.25 which is ten higher than last year's highest. September had the lowest of 130.25 which was a new low by 16.

Despite the low numbers we continued to inch our way to the mythical 400 brands in a year as we exceeded last years 382 by five. Astonishingly we achieved this buy not wearing 123 brands which we wore last year. If my maths is correct (and it very nearly wasn't) we added 128 new brands. Over the last two years we have worn 510 different brands of watches.

This leads me to the sad part of the show where we sit back and remember the brands that are no longer with us. Well, more accurately, those that weren't worn in 2021. This included the old guard such as Accurist and Elgin, the high end, F P Journe and those that were taken before their time like Axiom and Kennett.

After that beautiful, compassionate moment we can push on to the awards themselves. There was much disappointment at last year's lack of glamorous celebrities to assist with the presentation so this year the events team have gone to great expense to bring in the ever delightful Samantha and the rippling Sven, stars of that renowned antidote to panel games, I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue.

Believe it or not this is the first time these two have met despite their long involvement with the aforementioned show. Much to their surprise they found that they had a lot in common. Particularly that they share a great love for that most noble of games, Chess. During a break in rehearsals, they sat down in the green room to see who was the better tactician. However you can imagine the embarrassment of our poor intern when he burst in to find Sven manoeuvring his bad Bishop to block Samantha's English Opening. For those of you that were wondering, I can confirm that they were using a vintage Garde chess clock.

Anyway, to the awards and first up are the big scorers.

The most watches from one brand shown in a week goes to - Seiko with 31 worn back on the 23rd of April.

The most watches from one brand shown in a month goes to - Rolex with 110 examples worn further back in March.

The most watches worn through out the year - yes Rolex again with a total of 1,109 posted last year. In second place comes Seiko with 870. Omega trails in in third place with 757. Timefactors comes in fourth place with a respectable 449 ahead of Tudor with 348. Both of these top scorers managed to increase their annual total, unlike the other three.

This year's Night Owl/Early Bird award (which goes to the brand which started the most number of Friday threads) is awarded to, yet again, Rolex who started a total of thirteen threads, pipping their nearest competitor Panerai by two.

I have created two more awards this year. The Best Newcomer and the Bonkers watch awards.

The Best Newcomer is exactly that, the most popular brand which debuted this year. This year's Best Newcomer is.... KMK with an impressive 50 appearances (shooting them up to 26th in the leader board). But who are they you may ask? Well this is a story of one man, with a very particular set of skills, standing up against the forces of mass produced watches to heroically forge his own way (I might be over dramatising this but hey, if Holywood can do it so can I). He has put his skills to good use and assembled a number of watches to suit his own tastes. He quietly wore these watches on Fridays (and probably on other days too) for nearly the whole of 2021 (there were only three Fridays when he wore something else and one when he didn't post). Many congratulations to the man behind this true one man brand, Greasemonkey.

Next we come to the Bonkers Watch, which is also just as it says. The award goes to the most outrageous or Bonkers watch worn on a Friday. There are two in the shortlist for this inaugural presentation: RAJEN's H20 Deep Diver which is rated to 25km and Mr Tetley's piece of achingly cool Japanese futurism, his Tokyoflash Kisai Keisan. As bonkers as a 25km depth rating is, it is not quite as bonkers as a watch that makes it really difficult to tell the time, the one thing a watch is supposed to do. Mr Tetley's Tokyoflash Kisai is this years Bonkers watch.

And now to the award that you all may have been eagerly waiting for, the coveted Watch Counter's Watch of the Year. Again it was a difficult decision, made harder by the number of Dornblueths worn (ten, up from last year's eight). I have a suspicion that last year's winner, paw3001, was trying to make it two in a row when he wore his 99.4 however the appliqué numerals let him down. Stiff competition was put up by Toshi with his Favre Leuba Deep Blue and ben4watches with his vintage Seiko weekdater. In the end it boiled down to a choice between the substance of TopCat's MIH Annual Calendar and the style of kamakazie!'s 6b MkIII Scramble. Perhaps proving that I am not a fully fledged WIS I went with the latter. As much as I am impressed (and it is a lot) by the technical masterpiece that is the MIH it is the elegant simplicity of the MkIII that really grabs me. I feel what Carl at 6B (also known as Gasgasbones) achieved with the design of the watch is a superb example of form through function. Through the design evolution of his military chronographs from MkI to MKIII he succeeded in distilling the essential elements of a watch (removing numerals, reducing branding) to the bare minimum while still producing a watch that is still obviously a military watch. However it isn't entirely a victory of style over substance as the watch is powered by a Valjoux 7750 which has quite a history behind it. So congratulations to kamakazie!, Carl and the MkIII.

One last thing before I go. I would like to give you guys the opportunity to contribute to the count. For last year's bit on the side I recorded the styles of watches we like to wear on a Friday (more of that in a later post). This year you have the opportunity to chose the bit on the side. Would you like to find what which dial colours we prefer or our which are our favoured complications? Please answer in the Poll above (and, please, no sarky WatchMcWatchface answers. Oh alright, go on then).

Well, after all of that I am in need of a stiff drink and a sit down. The annual totals are below but I will post some graphs once I have recovered from the official after party.

    It’s a BLOODY FIX, I’ll tell ya!

Everyone knows applied Arabic’s make a watch super cool…I have been robbed! Someone please call the police

Wimm, seriously you are a Star, a Gentleman and the Watch Counter Supreme. I have thoroughly enjoyed your work throughout the year and these end of year reviews are the highlight (win or lose). So thank you and I’ll be dropping £20 into the fundraiser as a small token of my appreciation.

    Thank you
    Paw3001

PS I’ll be back on top in 2022!!!!!

Brilliant and thank you for taking the time to do this each month! Also, I never thought a watch I purchased in 2009 and have probably worn once (that particular Friday) in a decade would receive such a prestigious award. I’m sure my yet unborn grandchildren will take great delight in sharing this part of the watches history. Perhaps it’s Bonkers provenance will one day be spoken about on the Antiques Roadshow or the like. It’s very fitting since you never actually own a TokyoFlash. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Here’s a pic of said watch. Time is showing 9.53pm. ( I had to wait for 5 seconds to see this displayed!)

Edit: I’ll also be putting something into the fundraiser as a thank you to Will and his hard work.

LOL, fantastic. Thank you for all the hard work!

As a matter of interest, do you have a full list of the 123 brands not worn this year? I'd be curious to see it.

    Bravo Will!

    To my fellow forum members:
Will's deligence in compiling his Weekly Reports are all the more remarkable given his aversion to using a spreadsheet for his work. This came to light after a chance encounter with him revealed an astonishing collection of used napkins, crumpled cigarette packets and Post It notes upon which he records the weekly count before resorting to handwritten lists of each manufacturers count.

Truly a Herculean effort and most worthy of us showing appreciation by way of a fundraiser contribution.

A superb piece of prose, very enjoyable and a great accompaniment to my tea and toast this morning.

However it does raise a question about ones taste in watches when you see in black and white (or whatever colour scheme your smart phone has enabled) that you were the only one wearing the classic Majex brand throughout the year. I think the great unwashed of TZ-UK need to be educated!

I'm a bit concerned that, following Mr C's effusive contribution, I'm dwelling a little too much upon Wimm's plums but worse things have happened.

Great stuff as always Wimm and happy to see you like the 6B as much as I do. Definitely my favourite of GGBs output to date and I totally agree about the simplicity being one of its main attractions along with the brushed, domed bezel.

Lucky to have picked it up from another member here after missing out on the original run.

Thanks. You've blown the thin veneer of orderly competence that I have worked so hard to establish. I owe a lot to my long suffering clerk who translates my scribblings and writes them up in a hide bound ledger.

I had a look at these the other day. I think there may be two on the list masquerading as brands but aren't. I am unaware of any TAG only branded watches having been produced, I might have mis-identified a TH in the early days of 2020 when I wasn't so up to speed, although I happy to stand corrected. Also there is Chopard again, I think they ought to come under the umbrella of L.U.Chopard so I might have a little reshuffle this year.

    No Braun???

Given I'm abstaining from watches in 2022, this arrival today isn't a watch but could be... It's not much bigger than my regular 47mm PAMs.

Great work as ever and an entertaining read.

The Dear Departed list highlights the distortion in the Friday only WRUW as there are 3 brands on that list that I have worn (Jaquet Droz, Schaffen and Nodus) in 2021, but I guess not on a Friday.

I look forward to reading more in 2022!

Well, now that the hangovers have subsided I think it is safe for some brightly coloured squiggly lines. We haven't seen many charts recently so here is a large helping of them (sadly no pies or doughnuts).

Lets start looking at the year in general, below we have the count for the monthly top ten brands:

    , on Flickr

To give the above results a little perspective and allow us to see any trends a little more clearly I have averaged the monthly results over the weeks in each month. I have also added the total weekly average for each month on the secondary y-axis to see how they all compare:

    on Flickr

Interesting to see the steady decline of Seiko from April through to September before picking up again and also Rolex tailing off in December while all the others pick up.

And now for a pair of headache inducing charts. The numbers for the weekly top ten brands. To try and keep them from being totally unreadable I have split date into two charts, one for each half of the year.

    [url=https://flic.kr/p/2mYJFaS], on Flickr

    , on Flickr

April the Second really stands out, numbers plummet steeply, particularly for Omega but despite only recording five examples, a score that would usually put them to the bottom half of the top ten, they still held on to the third spot. I am not sure what we were doing that day but it looks like many of us were busy.

And just to show how 2021 compares to 2020 I have created this chart showing the annual weekly average of each year and the monthly weekly average:

    , on Flickr

And finally the Bit on The Side. Last year I decided, not only to count the watches but also study which styles we preferred. I started out with nine different styles but, as the year approached its half way point I began to think of what the BoTS for the following year should be. The first option that came to my mind was complication. I started thinking too hard about this and I became a bit befuddled and decided to stop counting chronographs, ana-digi and digi as they could be described as complications rather than styles. I now regret making that decision because I was stupid to be thinking too hard about it and because it messes up the integrity of the numbers. However my regret was not strong enough to make undertake the painful task of going through the count again. So here is the result of all of that additional recording, each style shown in terms of a percentage of the monthly total.

After I had stopped counting chronographs as an independent category they mainly went to "Other Tool" although the military style ones went to "Military". Most digital watches went to "Other Tool" as they were mainly G-Shocks. others probably just went to "Other".

    , on Flickr

Unsurprisingly we like tool watches in general and dive watches in particular. The struggle between military and dress watches kept me entertained (I think I need to get out more).

Please vote in the poll to determine whether dial colour or complication will be this year's BoTS (I am getting the impression that I shouldn't have made it binary). It will close in a couple of days to give me time to modify the spreadsheet.

Well, that is last year wrapped up, I'd better make a start on this year.

Superb stuff and lovely to read on a grey tuesday morning- many thanks for the hard work!

Some interesting names in the 'gone' list- surprised to see no Chopards. Also didn't know Durex made watches...
