Does anyone have any idea what this is?
It's about a foot long with a wooden handle that looks like it might have been inserted firmly into some sort of retainer; the shaft and lump on the end appear to be steel/iron.

I don't know what it is, but it so much resembles a bell clapper with a handle that I wonder if it might have come from a bell foundry, perhaps used for testing. Large bells often ended-up with significant invisible flaws which could only be found by striking the bell at various points and listening to the sound.
