    Steak knives and Etsy

I need some steak knives to replace what remains of a cheap set I’ve had for 20 years (handles have broken off all but two).

Had a quick look around and there are plenty of choices but while browsing Etsy for something else for a present, I stumbled across handmade/forged/Damascus and other great looking things.

I know there are some very knowledgeable people on here when it comes to knives.

I want to be able to chuck them in the dishwasher on occasion (or more to the point, not have to panic if the wife does) so Damascus is out as beautiful as it looks.

But what should I be looking at realistically in terms of a usable low maintenance but effective steak knife?

Budget of £100 I guess for four steak knives - but could go further if something appeals, although of course I would be happy to pay less.

I don't know much about knives but went into a high end shop in December looking for similar & they had a lot of knowledge.
Recommended these (link to the actual shop we went to) https://www.boroughkitchen.com/produ...ivewood-handle and was subsequently bought them for Christmas.
Used them on NYE and they are stunning. Carved through a hulk of porterhouse like a hot knife through butter. Almost a glide motion. They're pretty weighty in the handle and feel quality.
Only issue you might find is they are not dishwasher friendly because of the Olivewood handles. I just made sure I cleaned them up after use myself and put them back in their case.
Let me know what you end up with - I'm interested in learning about knives a bit now I've got these.

For pure practically these Victorinox are fantastic https://www.victorinox.com/uk/en/Pro...fe/p/6.7233.20

You shouldn’t put any decent knives in the dishwasher it won’t do them any good at all.

For steak knives I have Stuart Mitchell’s Centenary steak knives, like this:

I’d never buy pricey serrated steak knives - the edge that is dragged across the plate is serrated, will dull easiest - and prove a bitch to sharpen (if you even manage).

Not sure if they will last 20 years though

I don’t disagree with that, the Victorinox are basically disposable if the serrations wear out and Due Cigni do non-serrated which was what I meant to recommend…

Probably some of the best kitchen and steak knives on sale. Quality does not come cheap though.

Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

Perhaps not one of the big names but I have found these to be great, I have used the carving knife for 15 years or more and I bought some of the steak knives last month and up to now superb, as i say not a big name but work really well and cheap :)

Aren't steak knives only required for cutting overcooked poor quality steak?

Those are absolutely beautiful looking knives. Certainly more than I was looking to spend but blimey I’ve gone back to them a few times now.

As for the dishwasher, I completely agree. I’m just being realistic that they will go in there on occasion.

Stu is a superb maker. You might want to build up your set in several instalments? Like 2 knives at a time?

I would have no choice but to do that realistically.

Sometimes you don’t think through the implications of a question you ask as I keep coming back to them!
