CWC SBS -Issue Watch Seller Jailed

An interesting story. It's also notable that the illegal selling was found out as a result of e-bay purchasers contacting the MoD in order to try and authenticate the SBS CWC diver watches.

That the defendant, found guilty, had the surname of "Cheetham" was also unfortunate. Perhaps not the most auspicious name by which to do such trade.
I suppose he will be watching the clock, now, so to speak...

    Cheerio,

    AP.

You have to love the DM's attempt to make it sound a bit more 'Bond':

'Able Seaman Joshua Cheetham nicked a series of the gadgets - which operate at 300m underwater - while working as a storeman on warship HMS Kent.'

'The watches have been key pieces of technology for specialist UK forces for the last 30 years.'

Think there were/is more than one serviceman selling these going by the number appearing on the bay at one point. Think also it was people contacting CWC rather than the MOD, as all SBS civilian, or issued look the same and only CWC know which s/n's were sent to fulfil MOD contracts. Understand they are no longer releasing this information to discourage collecting current issue examples.

Might be a coincidence but a 2019 MOD issue which I've been watching on the bay has been withdrawn today.

There are nearly as many people selling them as there are people on here starting new threads about this subject in different parts of the forum.

Very true. Needless hyperbole, and a foolish practice.

The article notes it was when the MoD was contacted by ebayers. While they may have contacted CWC too (which the article does not note), I have my doubts CWC would have informed the MoD or others. However, I may be wrong.
It's a pity for bona fide collectors that the MoD will no longer release that info, if that proves to be the case (no pun intended).

Interesting about the watch sale withdrawal!

I suspect the e-bay buyers contacted Silvermans. Who would you contact in the MoD, you can’t just trot along to Main Building in Whitehall and knock on the door. I’m sure if Silvermans were contacted by several people asking the same things they would know from the details on the watches that they were part of an MoD order and alert them accordingly. Don’t know for sure, just seems a more logical way to do things.

Some e-bay buyers might have contacted Silvermans. Although that may be the case, Silvermans, unlike the MoD, are not the authority on the matter. Enquiring with the MoD, I agree, seems less straight-forward in several ways, although it should respond while Silverman's don't have to. As to what answer one receives from either, that is another matter!
