5 goes this morning. Thought I was going to fail when my first word had no correct letters but think I got a bit lucky at the end.

Just changed the settings to Hard Mode, makes you use any revealed hints in subsequent guesses.

Took 5 tries again today dispite getting the last 3 letters correct on line 3.
I didnt have hard mode enabled, but I have been playing that way anyway. I have now switched it on. Took 5 goes today. I do it together with my wife, it is a nice to share the puzzle.
'Non-hard' is hardly cheating as some have suggested - just a slightly different game. Anyway, tried hard today and got a 5, either way there's as much luck as skill involved IMO.

I've got a new twist. Wait until late in the day, have a look at the matrices of coloured blocks posted in this thread, and with knowledge of frequently used openers and other clues see if it is possible to reduce the number of attempts or even get it in one. It is possible to work out a lot from Kingstepper's earlier post alone.

I had the same problem in the autumn. A different game than this, not just the history but had to go back about 1500 levels and rejoin a team. I should have shared it to Facebook or similar.

I have a decent starter word that I use every time (spoiler: ROATE ). I then try to use a second word that contains common letters that aren't in the first word (tailored depending on what letter hits I got from the first word). After that it's mostly luck, as there are usually several word possibilities from the known letters.
Well, today was the first time since I started that I simply didn't get it!

For any mathematicians here, in this YouTube video it's deduced that the best opening word is CRANE, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v68zYyaEmEA
Unlike the approach that many advocate of covering as many of the letters as possible in the opening guess(es) we should also consider how many possibilities that will leave.
For example, if we pick EARTH, yes we have covered lot of common letters but there are far more possible answers if some of those letters are correct. Less likely that CRANE will give us some letters but if it does there are far fewer possible solutions.
Another 4 for me today.
