I prefer the greater than 0 chance, and reasoning about common letter combinations, and the placement of vowels versus consonants, and a reasonably wide English vocabulary.

    Hard vs easy.

I think it depends on where you are in the puzzle sometimes. Like if you don’t have the first letter and you have the remainder you could have 4 possible options. I’m this case hard mode is harder yes, but a guessing game effectively. No skill involved and not exactly hard. Just luck.

In other situations when you have four random letters in wrong order. It makes you think and there may be limited words which would work. In this scenario hard mode could help you get it on next go. But will probably take you longer. Probably some vocabulary skill required too.

Both above extreme examples but you probably can see what I mean.

I like easy mode personally. Also feel it is quicker to play on easy mode. I don’t want to be sitting there for 15 mins or longer each morning thinking of obscure words.

I guess it is nice to have both options.

    Absolutely fine that you prefer.

I also agree that your chance is greater than zero, while mine is zero. However the probability that I solve in the next two rows beats your probability, and that is the reason I will win 7 out of 10, even if we use the same first word.

In the end it is about what you prefer: guessing or working methodically towards solving the problem. None of them is superior, they are just different. For me it's pointless to keep guessing, I want to have the shortest probable way towards success. Still, sometimes I waste a row with guessing and when it turns out to be wrong, I curse.

I think calling it hard mode just means it’s harder to solve in 6.

Have you any evidence that your probability will beat mine, as you seem so sure? I have yet to lose a game, out of 18, and my most frequent success rate is 3 rows (7 games).

You assume that I am blindly guessing, but I am not. I use the letters already found, and their positions, and knowledge of what letters tend to go together, and the likelihood of vowels versus consonants, and I take my time to find a word that fits all that. After all the game is not time limited, and the score card does not record the time taken.

If I am wrong for that row, just like you I will still have excluded some possibilities. Maybe not as many possibilities as you, but to counteract that I would also have had a greater than 0 chance of actually solving it in that row. Depending on the word, This chance may be quite high, if there are few words that will actually fit all the criteria.

Anyway, I don’t think either way is inherently “better”, and I agree with you that different strategies suit different people.

Wordle is okay but we've also been enjoying Globle here for a bit of interfamily friendly rivalry. It's taken me between three and six attempts so far, five today but really should have been four.

Like Wordle, there is an element of luck with how much your opening choice narrows down the options. Yesterday I started with Colombia and got Ecuador in three.

Honestly, if you don't understand why guessing is statistically taking longer I have no words.

A quick google reveals this statistical analysis:

I used the word VODKA to show me which of SHAVE SHADE SHAKE or SHAME was the word. If I had tried them randomly, chances would been I wouldn't have solved it.

I understand now that this method is statistically better if you have more than two possible candidates; often however it takes me long enough just to think of one candidate let alone the four in your example. I think you are playing on a higher level than me.

I think we all understand the logic. For me it boils down to the choice between an attempt of a great score or the guarantee of a mediocre one … of course the aim for greatness may result in failure … that’s more fun for me than grinding out consistent mediocrity.

I think the words are getting a little harder.

Agree with all above, the words are getting harder and now the words are definitely more obscure words. Like the word yesterday which I don't think I have ever used but just assumed it was a word given where I was in the puzzel... perhaps if I was playing on 'hard mode' and made to guess, I would not have got it. My streak is in tact for now, but can see it ending soon with these type of words...Daily Mail readers agree !!!
