    Suitcases

Braving a holiday in couple of weeks and first time on a plane for 2 years

We need some new luggage and it’s the kind of item I would prefer to see in person to evaluate size and quality as opposed to buying on internet

Anyone with recommendations for bricks and mortar shops in the Manchester area ?

I recall Antler used to have an outlet store near Bury but that seems to have gone

Tripp cases are really good. We’ve got a few of their hard(ish) cases, from cabin size to ‘full’ size.

They used to be sold in Debenhams but now it seems to be their own outlets only:

    https://www.tripp.co.uk/ourstores

There is one in Cheshire & another in Lancashire though.

Try a tkmaxx - they normally have a few Samsonite/American tourister ones

    Suitcases

Trafford Centre or Cheshire Oaks, where there is a Tripp & Samsonite outlet I believe

Another vote for Tripp, inexpensive and tough enough….

We got all of ours from Cheshire Oaks.

When I was there last week, all the suitcase shops were running sales.

If you park in the valet parking behind Ralph Lauren, you pay a fiver but you get a voucher booklet for even more money off in most shops (always pays for itself I find!)

Cheshire Oaks or the Lowry Outlet in Salford Quays .
If you’re not sure or are struggling nearer the time , I’ve got almost unused cases you’re more than welcome to use .
Think Tripp, Antler , Timberland etc etc .

I don't know how old you are but if you still have a few years left in you and you do a fair amount of travelling, invest in a Globetrotter, they look old fashioned but are very useable and will survive any amount of bashing.

Several airlines such as BA and Virgin give free insurance on them, even old ones due to the high build quality.

Yes. We've had EC cases for 25+ years: over that time we've had one large, soft-sided towalong replaced with new for no charge when the main zip failed after about a decade, and the wheels on a medium sized one replaced for the cost of shipping after around 15 years hard use. So they honour the guarantee.

Could not agree more - roughly worked out that ours have done over 250,000 miles in the last 10 years with zero issues.

Rimowa. Expensive but top quality. A pal is in the trade and describes them as the Porsche of luggage

To be fair number of trips is a better metric than mileage...

We've used the same Dakine Split rollers for the past 20 years. They been to the Alps for Skiing by plane and train multiple times. Ditto the States, Caribbean and Med for other holidays by plane. Pretty bomb proof.

Kitted ourselves out at Bicester with Tumi years and years ago and they have been fantastic.

I’ve had a Rimowa Bolero for a lot of years and has seen many an airport carousel but has lasted well.
If I was to replace it, I would consider a Briggs & Riley expander.

    Happy with Samsonite.

Also use personalized embroidered straps from LilyBelz on Etsy.com for quick identification on baggage carousels...$18.95.

I used to travel a fair bit for work pre pandemic. I'd invested in a pair of Briggs and Riley cases - one large and one International Cabin sized.

They were expensive, but super durable. The expander concept is excellent. Lots of colleagues used Tumi (way more expensive, but not a big step up in quality)

Have you got a source for that or are you fibbing again? I've used one extensively for 20 years and have never heard of it.
    In the Sotadic Zone, apparently.

    Cheshire Oaks by 10am !!

Sorted in Kipling - just what we were looking for and great price.

Tripp stuff looked ok for the money. Staff in shop ignored us and we were the only ones in there. Assistant in Kipling most helpful

I love the Samsonite Termo Young zipless hard shell cases. I used to travel abroad regularly with a lot of electronics for work in my hold baggage and worried about the pen and zip trick relieving me of my livelihood.
These are TSA compliant but stop casual theft effectively.
I’m sure a lot of other brands do similar but these have lasted me years with zero issues.

    We've got Samsonite soft luggage.

Over time the hard shell stuff cracked and when we saw a set of Samsonite at a yard sale in the US for $10 we scooped them up and chucked away the old ones!
    Cheers,
    Neil.
