    Casio GW5000-1JF to GW5000U-1JF

    Afternoon all,

I've had a number of in's and out's this year and i'm currently debating if i should sell my GW5000-1JF and pickup the new GW5000U-1JF, my thoughts on this are:

    Pros:
    LED backlight
    DD/MM setting
    Time shown when using timers

    Con's
    Potentially £100 to upgrade

    Has anyone gone through this?

    Thanks

I have been pondering this also. I don't have the 5000 old. Used to. But given the options for a new watch with updates.....I'd go for it especially as you're selling the previous model.

    Casio GW5000-1JF to GW5000U-1JF

    Tough choice!
I’d kept getting close to buying the GW-5000 as the ultimate G-Shock but the MM:DD date format and dim 1.5 second backlight kept putting me off.
I had tried the GW-5610 which shares the same module but returned it for the above reasons.
I next tried the GMW-B5000D which is a great watch but quite heavy and prone to the knocks and scuffs that the G-Shock was designed to shrug off with ease.
I then went with the GW-5600 that linked through to my iPhone which I quite liked - but I still hankered after the simplicity of the self contained GW-5000.
Then the new ‘U’ version came out and I bought the GW-5610U discounted to see if the changes made any real difference.
Now with the light setting on 3 seconds and the brighter LED I found that could read it in the dark quite easily and the optional DD:MM format also helps legibility.
My new GW-5000U arrived here yesterday morning and I love it!
I don’t know if that helps but the new version is simply perfect for me

    Thank you for the feedback.

The above pros are what’s got me interested in switching, the GW5000 is the perfect G Shock for me, everything I need in a beater watch and nothing I don’t.

Where did you get yours from if you don’t mind me asking?

    Thanks

No problem; I picked it up off Amazon where it worked out around £275 and was delivered in just over a week which I was quite happy with. Plus I got it before Christmas

Got mine from Seiya and it came in just over 24 hours which was amazing!
I don’t have the original 5000 but have a 5610 and a bunch of DW5600’s. I do prefer the dd/mm option and it’s a great watch, just the alarm is so quiet like all the solar atomics and the display on my 5610 looks perhaps a tiny bit clearer. Time in all modes is what makes it for me - and it could be an ‘only G’ if I didn’t have about 40 others too!!

Sorry, I used Amazon.com as the UK version don’t seem to be stocking. I thought about eBay but felt the fixed price, door to door logistics of Amazon gave the buyer a bit more protection from hidden fees.
There’s quite a few on there now starting at $293.99!

I'm on the verge of buying one as well, although I'll be selling my current 5000 thereafter.

This is the full list of upgrades, apparently:

    • Bright white LED backlight

    • Adjustable 1.5 or 3 second afterglow for light

    • Current time display in stopwatch and countdown timer mode

    • 24-hour countdown timer is settable in units of seconds and not only hours and minutes

    • Adjustable date format (M.DD or DD.M) and adjustable day of week language (English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Russian)

    • Quick return to timekeeping mode by holding down Mode (C) button for more than 1 second

    • Home city time and world time display swap in world time mode by pressing the top two buttons (A and B) at the same time

    • 5 world time settings (48 cities), 31 time zones, the additional 2 time zones are for the cities of Fernando de Noronha (-2) and Kathmandu (+5.75)

    I'm being tempted again.

It will be my fourth 5000, all previously and regretfully sold due to a mix of failing eyesight and dial readability.

However, now I've accepted I need to wear glasses full-time it's back on the wish list.

All the upgrades are a positive and may be difficult to resist.

Now to find the best place to source.

    Slight deviation if I may?

Are these really worth three times the price of a 5610? They do look nice…

For me it certainly was, I picked up the 5610 but didn’t really like the colours. The more mono look of the 5000 and the heft with the screw in case back won me over.

I had the same thoughts due to the cost difference and I had zero regrets and now it’s a debate if the new one (u) will be worth it with the updates.

    Yes👍
I’d caveat that by saying that it is to me; I like the heritage of the steel case harking back to the first G-Shock watches in the 1980’s.
Similarly the extra weight just feels that bit nicer on the wrist.
Ultimately does it tell the time any better - no.

That’s about what I paid and it took around a week to arrive. The thing I liked was that you didn’t get caught out with any unforeseen VAT, customs clearance fees or Royal Mail charges - and I got it before Christmas!

I’ve just ordered one from watch.do.uk, just under £250 if you signup to the newsletter as you get 5% discount. Shipped within an hour, some reviews don’t make positive reading but will make judgement on we the coming days based on my own experience.

I looked but can only see a Gw5000u-1ER?

Anyone know if the Gw5000u-1JF and Gw5000u-1ER are exactly the same?

I believe these are sold everywhere in Europe now but not here in the UK - so I should think they are the same model. I’m wearing my Seiya bought model today and it has ‘made in Japan’ on the caseback and below that the CE mark. I suspect they are the exact same model.

Same watch just an EU release apparently. Wouldn’t get to hung up about the JF/ER. Go for the best deal.

Was 20% VAT removed from the sale price (as stated it would be in the Ts & Cs) when you completed the purchase?

I just ordered from here as it seemed the best deal around and looking on trustpilot and WUS others have had good buying experiences.

No VAT removed but from comments I have read they pay this so no import duties or fees when delivered but we will see how that goes.

I noticed this one after completing my order, I’m assuming you have to add VAT and charges once delivered?

I always expect to pay VAT and charges on purchases from the EU now.

    Still a good deal though.

Voila! Not had a chance to check paperwork but this came from Seiya with the Japanese market box and hang tags - others have commented they are surprised this model has the European CE mark - apparently the old model didn’t have this as it was never made for the European market? I suspect the caseback is the same for all of the U series versions. Ps the buckle is also stamped Japan

I checked mine which is another JDM import and it has the CE mark as well.
The thing I have noticed compared to the GW-M5610U-1ER is that the strap is very much softer. I’ve read this comment from others previously and it really is true!
I wonder if the same is true with the GW-5000U-1ER compared to the JDM version?
