Thread: Refinishing a titanium watch

    Refinishing a titanium watch

Following on from the recent tread about the watch polisher on Instagram (who does some amazing work), I reached out to him about giving my defy 21 some TLC - but they don't do Ti. Does anyone know anyone that does refinishing to a high standard on Ti? The watch is a zenith defy 21 el primero in Ti. I would like the full watch doing, the watch is about 3 years old, and I wear it every day and it gets a fair amount of abuse!

    Thanks

This may be more difficult than you imagine - I believe Titanium dust and shavings are actually a fire hazard and need special equipment to extinguish the fire. This will probably invalidate many workshops insurance and require specialist tools and environment to work with - I remember from my biking days that Ti frames were a bugger to get welded if something failed.

There’s been a few threads on here about this (I was interested for my Pelagos) in the past where using an eraser had a lot of success.

I’ve had a search but can’t locate them in the search function sorry.

If it’s just light scratches, then a scotchbrite pad will bring out all of the scratches. I have a few titanium framed bikes and it works brilliantly on those. If you have a look on you tube, you should find some clips that help.

    It works.

Use those blue and red erasers. They can be bought any where.

The watch is a combination of brushed and polished parts, i gather the scotch pad will only work on the brushed part. Not sure I trust myself enough to try on my watch! could buy a old cheap titanium watch and try on that first.

And something from last year with an equally fiddly mixture of brushed and polished.

If it's just to touch it up then I've used Garryson Garryfelx on all of my watches, both stainless and Titanium. They have the same effect as a rubber eraser but with more control in the finish. I bought the set of 4 in different grades and they'll last me a lifetime.

I recommend Chrontime for refinishing titanium

They did an excellent job refinishing one of my watches with a complex mixture of brushed and polished titanium. Also, Oris (no stranger to titanium watches in its range) uses Chrontime as its official UK service centre.

Without derailing the thread too much, as a recent Defy 21 purchaser I'd love to hear more about your ownership experience. Great to hear that it's a daily for you. Have you had any issues or problems? I've found in the few times I've worn it it's a good conversation starter!

I had an problem early on with the chrono not registering on the minute dial, it ended up going back to Zenith for about 2 months to get fixed (if you search I have a thread about it somewhere). I still love it and don't think I will replace it anytime soon, I work in wood flooring and wear it every day, it gets covered in saw dust, oils and all kinda stuff. Its certainly no safe queen. The small scratches don't really bother me just that other tread made me think a refresh would be nice. I did knock it off a table at work about a month ago onto a concrete floor, my heart did stop as I did it. It got a small scuff to the bezel but came off lightly considering the drop. I often time random things just to use the chrono function. I have not measured it accurately but it does lose time, maybe a little more than it should. Every month or so its a few mins behind. I did talk to Zenith about it, but they said its another few months back to Zenith so just live with it. The lack of any micro adjustment on the bracelet is a little annoying on what is apart from that an excellent bracelet. Its very light so not having a perfect fit is not the end of the world.

I have had the odd comment, mostly from work people when I remember to take it off before doing samples and they have seen it on the side. But no one has ever said anything about it outside of work, which I like.

Thanks for all the comments about finishing, will pm.

Great to hear that you wear it like it should be worn. Mine seems to keep pretty good time, I would say 2-3 seconds in 24 hours. It does have quite a noisy rotor and a bit of wobble when it's spinning quickly.

It looks excellent work on that VC bracelet. I may need to keep your details to hand one day!

yes that is one thing, the rotor is very noisy! I checked that when I first got it and others had the same noise
