Thread: Unexpected NOS Rolex

    Unexpected NOS Rolex

Popped into my AD yesterday with no expectation of buying anything at all. Had a chat and AD said that Rolex had released a load of “new old stock” recently due to the display windows being empty with the exception of 28mm DateJusts and a Cellini or two.
Curiosity got the better of me so I had to have a gander. Most were 11*** series pricey DayDates in 36mm, but one really got my attention. It was a 16264 turnograph. White baton dial, oyster bracelet, F series and minty fresh with all factory stickers!!! It came with a new style box an the latest 5 year warranty.
Things must be getting desperate when Rolex have to sell stuff from the archives like this 20 year old completely untouched watch. It was to surreal to refuse. These watches were always unpopular back in the day, and if I’m honest I never really liked them but I just couldn’t pass it up. I ended up buying a 20 year old NOS stickered watch from an AD with a 5 yr Rolex guarantee….things are getting weird!

I hope you paid the price it was 20 years ago?

Less the discount you’d have got 20-years back

    How random.

I wonder how they priced it.

I'd also be interested to know how they priced it.

    Same as a modern 36mm DJ ?

    I'd have bought it mind....

No need to wonder. It was £4900. Not bad when you consider the cost of the current 36mm DJ with a white gold bezel

That is an excellent price. Would be good to see a photo, think there’s a few variations of the 16264 - black dial, silver dial, Roman etc.

Your tale made me look that up- it wasn’t a model I recognised.

I never really liked them but I just couldn’t pass it up.” Stopped me in my tracks, though.

I’d need to like something a lot to spend £5k.

Looks nice:) I had a near new omega 2004 Seamaster Chrono earlier this year that had spent its life in a safe and was told by respected watch maker of this forum that is should be serviced as he said that the rubber seals and oil would be knackered even though it hadn’t been used. Would Rolex have serviced it before selling it on or is it full of treacle?

I prefer the modern Turn-O-Graph by a country mile.

Mind you, that was a stroke of fortune if you actually like the watch.

Would be happy to put some photos up but can’t figure out how to post them. Any ideas?

Totally agree. The old five digit references are way behind their more modern cousins in terms of quality, fit and finish. But seeing one factory fresh was so unusual. And yes it looks good on the wrist for an instant vintage piece.

It came with a five year warranty, the same as any other new watch. So far keeping perfect time too.

Lovely turnograph Tony, best of the lot with that dial too!

I wonder where the old stock came from, and why it wasn’t sold years ago?

Great result! Love the Turnograph, had a two tone in rose gold years ago. Enjoy!

I really like the Turnograph. I’d never heard of it until I started using this forum.

I haven’t got a spare £5k right now but I’d also have been unable to turn it down. Great pickup and looking forward to seeing a photo.

Presumably they would they have serviced the watch before offering for sale again? I can't help but think that 20 year old oils will have lost their original viscosity.

It can go for a warranty repair if not working properly.

I've bought quite a few NOS watches over the years and in my experience it is often because they were returned to the distributors with an anomaly of some sort, marks etc.

Years later they are found and sold off.
    Cheers,
    Neil.

I use the website www.imgur.com which is free. You upload your photos there, then when you click on them you'll see multiple links you can copy. To post on the forum copy the link titled "BBCode (message boards & forums)", paste it into a comment here and it'll show the image

Until the OP gets his photo posting sorted out, and to save anyone else searching for it, here's an image of what I believe to be the model in question. This one was recently sold in The Netherlands.

That’s pretty cool. Maybe they’ll release a nos birth year watch for me lol.

Can't be many of those knocking about with a 2021 warranty card!

  31. #31
Does it need a service soon if it was manufactured a long time ago?

  32. #32
Keeping perfect time so far so looks ok to me nevertheless it’s covered by a 5 year warranty so not concerned really.

That’s an excellent score. One of my favourite Rolex models. Always liked how it sort of bridges the gap between the classic Datejust and the sports models with that bezel. Enjoy it!

I have to admit - I like the look of that watch (never previously seen) - and also like the ‘of it’s day’ model name “Turnograph”.

  35. #35
Interesting post. I would imagine as Rolex have gone to the trouble of printing a new warranty card for it they would have also fully checked / serviced the watch prior to it being send to the AD. Interesting how they priced the watch at £4900, I wonder how Rolex or the AD come to that number.

Is ADs offering NOS going to become a thing? I’d love to pick up a NOS day-date from the 80s or 90s
